Scenario:
Purchased a new WS477/CS277 combination (model WS4777-COM), made in China. Order was held in backlog for several months. I can only assume that this is a relatively early model from China, if the factory was moved or whatever.
Wiring double and triple checked!
• Configure new WS477 in AHP as PRO module/PRO 3-Way wall switch module.
Result:
Will only work by physically pressing the button. Will NOT respond to a manual signal from AHP.
New companion switch CS277 does not control at all.
SoftStart/Preset Dim does not work at the switch
• Configure new WS477 in AHP as Older lamps (no SoftStart)/ 3-Way wall switch module.
Result:
Yes, WS477 DOES RESPOND to a manual on/off signal from AHP.
Will respond to a dimming signal from AHP.
New companion switch CS277 does NOT control at all.
Old companion switch CS277 DOES control on/off.
I think that the new WS477/CS277 is defective. Comments?
Thanks,
Mike

The set came from X10 and possibly from a new factory in China?
Does the master switch ramp On and Off slowly or instantly?
If instantly they are not soft start. That may explain why the old before soft start choice worked.
New CS277 maybe defective if an older one you had works.

Thanks.
If configured as PRO module/PRO 3-Way wall switch module, X10 signal does not have any effect so I cannot see the soft start. However, the Preset/Dim does not work either - at the switch. I am going to assume defective. Grazie.
-
Since it does work with the old before soft start choice. My thoughts are they no longer support Soft Start or Preset Dim.
Maybe if we beg real nice X10 may actually publish an update with the proper information. rofl

Try configuring the switch as an older "non-softstart switch in AHP and see if switch responds then. Also search this forum with model numbers, the Ws777 combo is finicky about the relation of the master and the Line and Load position. You could also have a "noise" or "phase coupling" problem (more things to search).

As indicated above, I did reconfigure as "Older lamps (no SoftStart)", and manual on/off and dimming worked from AHP. I will run my normal evening program to see if the signal still gets there. Perhaps there is another problem. More later. I cannot get their Support for an RMA for a return until Monday anyway. Merci.

yeah I re-read your original post. Sorry.
If possible, post X10's explaination of; no more Softstart / resume dim. They have either found a bunch of old switches, or they took out a resistor to save a half cent.
-
I believe the soft start and resume dim was part of the firmware.
I have two different Soft Start LM465s with two different firmware versions. The earlier one does not flash correctly with a Security Console flashing the lights. The later one Soft Starts but reverts to instantly On and Off if a stream of commands is received.
From the description of an old CS277 working with the new switch {manual On and Off anyway} and the one in the kit not working. At least the CS277 sounds bad and the WS477 may not have Soft Start and Preset Dim.
Glasmann is there a small white sticker on the modules with a Date Code?
-
Yes, there is a small round sticker on the WS477: "06C11"
-
06C11 is 2006. Before Soft Start and Preset Dim was added.

They found a skid full of old stock in the corner of the warehouse! :'

Looks that way dave w. Unless they found a new factory and it used a strange Date Code format.
-
Curious. I do not need the SoftStart and Dimming for an outside light, but I kinda assumed I got a new product. I will ask Support if possible. I did a scan of the outside of the box but was not sure how to attach. Grazie, Mike

I hope they didn't send one of these old switches to the new factory with a note saying: " Here build us 20 thousand like this". rofl

I wouldn't be surprised if they did, though. B:(
