Are the MS10A motion detectors smart enough
to know the difference between humans and
small pets?

no

There are more posts that go into detail on
this subject, just look back a page or two.
What I do is set mine on a really high ledge
so that it will catch a 5' tall human but
not a cat... as long as they don't climb...

Mount the motion detector upside down. The
zone that is protected comes striaght out
from the top of the detector and at an
angle from the bottom. Flip it upside down
and mount it a little higher than the
tallest place your pet would be and it will
hit on anything at that level and above. I
have mine all mounted about 5 feet. 11
inches from the floor and my German Shepard
and St. Bernard roam around with no problem.

Thank you I gave you a PLUS. #:)

For something small like a cat or if an occasional mouse makes it way in, try a piece of tape across the entire bottom of the lens start with a 1/4 of an inch and try mounting different heights so that motion detector is unable to see all the way to the floor. Actually a lot of manufacturers use a similar method to make inexpensive pet friendly motion detectors.
