Title: Oddball holdover from Active Home
Post by: Dan Lawrence on June 24, 2006, 01:00:20 PM
Noticed something odd in the reports.  When you view a report in AHP, it shows up in your browser.  If you you look on your browser's location line, it reads "file:///C:/PROGRA~1/ACTIVE~1/general.html"

Tilded, just like Active Home did on your hard drive under 9x, a holdover from what dos did to extended filenames.

What's odd is the folder that AHP resides in is C:/Program Files/Active Home Pro, not ACTIVE`1.

Wierd!!!

Dan Lawrence:
I think you'll find that C:\PROGRA~1\ACTIVE~1  and C:\Program Files\ActiveHome Pro  are the exact same folder.  The short name with the tilde is a "shortcut" to the long name and is part of Microsoft's scheme for dealing with long filenames in a way that's compatible with the original MSDOS file and folder name limitation of an 8 character name with a 3 character extention.

I am well aware of the 8.3 DOS filename limit.  I worked in the PC industry for 15 years.

It's just odd that only in the Report view do you get the 8.3 filename, nowhere else and only in your browers location line.

XP is far enough away from DOS that it hit me as odd.
