Title: Has anyone got Vanguard I C C to work with Vista yet? AND UPDATES
Post by: webscott on March 25, 2007, 11:41:33 AM
Has anyone been able to install Vanguard Internet Control Center with the VA11A & CM19 under Windows Vista? If so how. If not lets keep this thread here so that we can post updates on the drivers. Please do not post about AHP.

There are a couple of workarounds that some Vista OS users could use. However, it will also depend on which updated version of Vista you have. See Microsoft wants ALL manufactures to pay a fee of 500.00 per year to be able to have their drivers "signed" or should I say recognised by the $$$$ rich Redmound camp. Unlike XP a windows user can not just install a non registered-unsigned driver. Anyways as I said at the beginning you might be able to try one of these tricks while waiting for the new driver(s).
WARNING-Understand that like in 2000 and XP you will now have your computer open to outsiders that may try to load bad computer controlling drivers.

The best is the following steps:
-Start/Programs/Accessories
-Right-click "command prompt" and select "run as administrator"
(this will bring up what looks like an old dos type window)
At the command prompt type bcdedit / set loadoptions
DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
-now reboot

The simpler option is to hit F8 at boot up. The problem here is that you will have to do it EVERY time you turn on the computer and the monitor will show "test mode" in the four corners of you windows. Most people that I talk to say that they can live with that.

Now back to where I began. In the newest version of Vista 64 MS has locked these options out on updates. Heck they want the $$$$
And in Vista 32 which I have you can not do the bcdedit trick on the newest updated version.

Just to put a reality check on some of webscott's info, Microsoft doesn't charge $500 per year for driver signing; it's a per device driver fee and is as low as $250. I don't like everything Microsoft does (particularly the DRM and trusted computing models), but the driver signing program is pretty solid. Requiring signed drivers be tested to Microsoft's specifications (which for USB devicecs are mostly just the USB consortium's requirements) ensures a minimum level of performance and conformance to standard features. It tries makes sure that devices don't prevent your system from shutting down, that it responds to the OS without problems, and similar things. Microsoft has done a lot in recent years to make the burden for hardware testing and driver signing light, and I think it's a good thing.

OK, it's now July 1st and I'm still looking for an answer.  I first posted this question back in February....

My Vanguard camera is installed at my vacation home.  It is running fine, that is not the issue.

My problem is that I can't access it remotely from my main home with my PC which is running Windows Vista.

When I go to the gate.x10.com web page, I'm prompted to install Active X.  When I try to install Active X, nothing happens.  I just get the blank black box.  Everytime I return to the page, the same thing happens.

I'm not looking for X10 hardware drivers like most everyone else mentions on these boards.  I'm looking for a way to get Active X to work on my Vista PC so that I can access the Internet Control software web page to control my remote camera.  I can use other Active X programs from other sites on my Vista PC, just not the X10 one.

It can't be that hard for X10 to provide this.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.....

SORRY ALL. I think I'm about to move on. When I started this post I purchased the an x10 wired camera system and a Vista based computer for security. Still mos. later there is not a way to use the vanguard software & USB combination. I just want to say nice job X-10 staff. Thank you so much for the (lack of) support. I think it is now time for me to move on. Spend more money with another vendor that actually cares about their customer base. Once I find the best working value I plan to create a website with links (not directing to x-10).

I am thinking X10 should be reported to the BBB if they don't get their act together soon with cheap software and horrid drivers. You pay a good amount of money for low-quality cameras and crappy/buggy software. Oh and for the guy ragging on Vista: If you're going to make software for a product, your product, and sell hardware that replies on your software for it to properly work: it's YOUR responsibility to provide users with help and properly working drivers for the equipment they bought.

Wow! I read all three of your posts. Your having problems installing the Video input adapter aren't you. I think this is the thread you need:  http://www.x10community.com/forums/index.php?topic=13179.0 (http://www.x10community.com/forums/index.php?topic=13179.0)

Welcome to the forum revenger681. Please understand... we are volunteers here at the forum... customers just like yourself. I really like X10 and Home Automation... that is why I visit here and help out when I can. The HA stuff is little more than a niche market product.... sometimes that can make things a tad less "finished" looking. But it all works.... and it's awesome.

Liars and double talkers, this is the customer service I've received. Vanguard should be flagged as inappropriate software for Vista. Not only is it incompatible( THIS SOFTWARE HAS CRASHED 2 LAPTOPS AND A DESKTOP OF MINE )  THE PROCEDURE TO INSTALL HAS CAUSED A VIRUS TO INSTALL WITH IT NOW COSTING ME $$$$$$ THAT X10 HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING ABOUT!!!!!!!! THEY SEEM TO HAVE EXTREME ISSUES WITH COMMON SENSE USER FRIENDLY IS NOT PART OF X10'S PRIORITY LIST. THEIR CAMERAS WORK GREAT UNTIL  THE SOFTWARE ISSUES BECAME ALL THAT WE COULD(COULDN'T) DEAL WITH. I'VE NEVER BEEN TREATED WITH LESS RESPECT FROM A COMPANY THAT KNOWS THAT THEIR PRODUCTS REPEATEDLY HAVE CAUSED CUSTOMERS TO SWEAR OUT LOUD &&^%^&*((*%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! x10 SHOULD FOCUS ON THE REAL ISSUES AND LOSE THE BAD PORN THEY SEEM TO THINK IS MARKETING. SMUT SELLS GARBAGE AND THATS WHAT X10 HAS BECOME. OH YA I'M FAR FROM SHY SEX IS SEX BUT GET REAL.

Welcome to the forum WESAYYSO!

Sorry to read your having sexual problems. Certainly you can't blame X10 for any STD you may have contracted... you should have had protection before you started installing. Viruses are everywhere... and computers are only human... always use protection.

Many of the forum users have complained... in the past.. about X10's use of smut. It is likely it was the complaints about the smut that advanced the idea of using porn. But whereas many of us also object to the porn... it would seem unfair to refer to it as "BAD PORN". Other members have implied that it is some of the better free Internet porn.

Posting in all caps... is considered in poor taste... as it is interpreted a yelling. This is NOT customer service... this is a community forum... a loosely associated group of X10 users who volunteer our time and efforts to help other users. We would sincerely like to help you with your problem too. However... all cap rants.. doesn't give us much to work with.

A nicely worded very specific post about your problem may find a user that has a solution for your problem. That's how the forums work.

Dear Dave,
Stay protected you say. I refer to the exact directions given to me from x10 Attached is the software that you requested.  Please make sure that you have your firewall and antivirus disabled when you install and register your software. So mocking
my misfortune only proves that x10 needs to get a true concept of 'lie-ability!!!! But thanks for the confirmation always stay protected folks best way to do that is to abstain from x10.

Please understand... I have no desire to mock you or your misfortune. And... I am not X10. I don't work for X10.. I receive nothing from X10. I offered to be of help if I could be.

Dave,
You might as well work for x10 because your ability to focus on the issue is as lacking as was the response from customer service. THE ISSUE HERE IS THE FACT I WAS INSTRUCTED TO TURN OFF MY FIREWALL AND SPYWARE CAUSING  my operating system to malfunction. I've been frustrated with the inability of x10's customer service they have lied, mocked, and all in all been rude.My intent is to clear my conscience by WARNING others of this potential MISFORTUNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In my experience almost all software producers instruct the end-user to disable firewall and anti-virus and spyware  protection before installing - they also tell the end-user to make sure that no other software is running.

WESAYYSO, I understand your frustration, but I'm sure that the Vanguard software has been virus checked so your issue is probably not there - perhaps you mistakenly visited a suspect website before, during or after the install whilst your protection was disabled?

Virussus (virii?) happen even with virus protection and firewalls installed and operating - I wiped out my desktop just before Christmas simply by opening an email that was sent to me by my sister - the email and it's attachment had been checked for cleanliness by McAfee (constantly updated and contantly running, even during software installation). This not only proves what Dave says about computers being only human, it also shows that virus protection is only human and more importantly that humans are usually less than human.

The fact that you managed to wipe out a total of THREE computers is very unfortunate - most people would investigate further after the first one was disabled instead of going ahead and attempting to install again. Almost everyone would simply STOP after the second bad install and think again or ask for assistance. I don't think it's morally possible to lay blame on a software producer for an end-user being careless enough during an allegedly doubtful installation to take out 3 different computers.

I also don't work for X10. I also have been disappointed by their lack of customer service. I (and many others on this forum) also avoid their website. What I have found is that this forum, which is hosted by X10 and operated by devoted users of X10, is a VERY informative place to visit. However, it's probably hard to visit and make intelligible comments if you completely run out of computers due to continuously and blindly following what you believe are defective instructions to install what you believe is defective software.

$0.02

Have a wonderful day and don't forget to return your 'defective' X10 stuff for a full refund   :)

Dave,

I will try to work on that "focus thing". Thank-you for pointing out my shortcoming.

I've been frustrated with the inability of x10's customer service they have lied, mocked, and all in all been rude.My intent is to clear my conscience by WARNING others of this potential MISFORTUNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand and even FEEL your frustration. Some of us (here at the forum) sometimes refer to Home Automation (X10) as a hobby. We realize that HA (and it products) aren't Plug'N-Play and often don't work Out-of-the-box. The challenge of stepping out of my comfort zone... and learning and growing... can be BOTH frustrating and rewarding. I find it to be a complete distraction from everyday life... hence: An enjoyable hobby. It's too bad you didn't find the enjoyment.

These posts are never removed! Your posted warning will remain here... for who knows how long. And it is searchable too (even from google) You've posted a fine warning! I hope your conscience is cleared.
