Title: R.F.I.D.
Post by: HA Dave on October 25, 2008, 09:19:16 PM
I just found a RFID Kit (http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/science/907a/) at ThinkGeek. I though it could be useful for anyone looking for an RFID solution.

Get one for that robot in your back yard.
You never know when it might discover free will.  ;)

I was thinking of automated identity recognition. To maybe unlock doors, turn off the alarm system, and/or run welcome routines.

More and more... I use remotes less and less. I know it's not.. just me. I like the idea of controlling.... by giving away the control. The more control I can turn over to the Home Automation Computer... the better.

I have a kit from Parallax that I have been playing with. I believe they use them in some of their Basic Stamp projects.

Here's a good RFID link
We use RFID for access control solutions in gated communites and commercial properties.

There are definite possibilities there...

Here is a Canadian source that sells RFID kits: CanaKit (http://www.canakit.net/)
Their reader has a relay output that could easily interface to X10.

RFID Modules would be a great addition to the X10 Line up...

X10 could make a standard looking module that has the house and unit code as normal, but instead of receiving on that code, it would send that code when an RFID Tag was within range of it, and send an off code when the tag left the area, like the motion sensors act in that sense...

and to get fancy, they could have the RFID tags be one for each house code, or just in sets of 4 like the cameras that way AHP users could take things further and have certain events happen for certain tags.

Or..... if a user has an idea for using the RFID tags (or implants) some of the kits could easily be connected to "hacked remotes" or simple powerflash modules (http://www.x10.com/security/x10_pf284.htm). Home Automation is still... and may always be a niche market. But easy to do modifications (and user created software) is what allows us to expand into new areas.

Sharing the new ideas here at the forums.... just makes it easier and better for everyone.

Anything ever come of this?

I think it would be more efficient to use RFID for occupancy sensing than bluetooth on  your cell phones (because it sucks the life out of it)

I've also see the RFID kit from parallax but have never played with it. However I am confident I could tie it into HA.

I played around with the Smarthome Insteon RFID Kit. Well sort of.
I had extra I/OLincs so I only bought the reader, relay board and wall wart.
I got it working after finding out the instructions where wrong on how to wire it.
Published my corrections over on the Smarthome site and guess what. Months later the instructions are still incorrect.  :(
Technically the relay board could trigger anything with a dry contact input. Doesn't have to be an Insteon I/OLinc.

I have also have one of the Parallax RFID reader kits and have dumped the serial data to a two line LCD display.

I don't think anyone has jumped on this (at this forum) yet. I keep seeing more and more RFID devices and readers online as well. I am sure that RFID could be a usefull part of Home Automation. I wouldn't even mind an implant.. as say... a digital key to unlock the door. But there are also long range RFID [powered] tags (http://cliste.sailwhatcom.com/) that could be used for car counting.

you would just insert a tag or card into your purse or wallet...which I assume leaves the house when you or your wife does...

From there you would use motions sensors along with occupancy count to determine actual room occupancy.

Here is a good read right here (along with all its children pages):

There are several ways to remove that fur covering from a deceased feline.

I really LIKE the idea of a [grain of rice sized] implant... that would function as a key. Eliminating the burden of carrying keys... and the repetitive task of using them... is GOOD Home Automation (IMHO). The cards attached to a key chain are nice too.

"The man that seeks to carry a cat by the tail shall learn things he could not learn in any other way!"  (probably a serious mis-quote of Mark Twain, but me likes it.)

It doesn't! However there is only ONE way to remove fur from a LIVE cat.... and that's with barber shears. No animals are ever harmed in the making of good Home Automation. (With the possible exclusion of the PowerFlash Mole Detector (http://forums.x10.com/index.php?topic=12487.msg69644#msg69644)).

Unfortunately... much of the original artwork in the PowerFlash Mole Detector thread has been lost.

OK as long as we are on the subject of felines.
I have a MS14 motion detector on the floor next to the cat litter box. When the detector is triggered it turns on one of those Glade tiny fan forced air freshener thingies for twenty minutes.

I augmented the output of the air freshener by mounting a 7W night light underneath the flagrance bottle. It kind of "juices" the output up a bit by warming the oil. But the real use is to keep the fan from running all the time from the local control sense current (those little fans don't require much power).

Naturally this Rube Goldburg contraption is called "The Pepe LePew Stink Good Fragrance Generator" in the home control database.  Works good, and I presume kitty appreciates the light on the box at night.  rofl

Now back to RFID i have 2 devices that werent very expensive and work quite nicely.  The first is on ebay item#350196886423  the other item#350249806307  The first item is nice and i use the contacts of relay on the board to short the key for arm and disarm.  I use the bell function for arm and the pin code or rfid tag for disarm, mounts on wall and is not to bad looking.  Then i moved up to the second item which is now mounted behind the sheetrock so no visible wires or eyesores to see.  I also use the small round button tags included with the first item( can also be purchased seperatly.)  The smaller the tag the closer it needs to be, but instead of remotes you can use the id tag on your keychain for disarm, plus with the mounting being out of sight even if keys are lost or stolen finding the exact spot on the wall to disarm the alarm is near impossible.  The one nice thing about the small discs the size of a dime is that i just tuck it into my cell under the battery compartment and use my phone as key.  I mean really who doesnt carry a cell phone with them.  Anyway just thought i would post what i use rfid for.
