Title: Is this a P0RN site?
Post by: kevinvinv on December 19, 2008, 11:12:19 PM
I don't know... is it really necessary for X-10 to basically have this new level of sex in all their ad's?   I would never send my kid there now to look around for cool gadgets.  Anyone else?

I talked about X10 and Home Automation to friends and family for years. But lately when talking about HA... I say SmartHome... it's very sad. But I just don't want to be associated with "girly pictures".

I'm far from a prude but there is a decency limit. If it gets any worse, they'll need to rename it the XXX10 site.
As I posted elsewhere, I might check out the ad but I will never† make home automation purchases based on a scantly clad model. Furthermore if I can find the same price elsewhere, I'll go there to buy my automation items.

It's Horrible, Childish, Ridiculous, Out of hand!
I shop for my x10 stuff on eBay anyway.

I tend to buy from Automated Outlet http://www.automatedoutlet.com/home.php rather than X10.com, no "porn" and the prices are always lower than X10's.

You know.... it's OK to shop anywhere you'd like. But the best deals are at the X10.com Site. I keep an eye on the deals. I had read about this here at the forum... however I don't remember you wrote this. But if you watch the deals... and calculate the per piece cost for items... you can then compare the prices else where. Not only will X10's deals be cheaper... but you'll get free shipping to boot.

Of course... using the "shop by deals" method you will end up with a nice bunch of extra stuff (most of us store that in a plastic storage box of some sort). But even some of the stuff I thought I'd never use... I've found uses for. Meanwhile... I think I average about $5 per piece for my X10 addiction (and NO shipping fees).

Yes.  This is ridiculous.  It is looking more like porn site and less like a respectable business.  I don't mean to put the models out of business, but there is no coloration between a half naked woman and security products, unless you're spying on her illegally (which is illegal).  The photos make no since for selling the products.  I like the products, but I'm canceling my subscription with X-10.  Recently, I was checking my email and one of my co-workers at a glance thought it was porn.  I had to explain it was an email for security products.  Long before this incident, I wanted to contact X-10 about the photos, but never got around to it.  Please join me in flooding X-10 with messages to remove distasteful photos and consider advertising the product, not the woman.

Ethicschk,

I agree, I dare not open an X10 email, or the web site at work.

There is NO way to even explain the pictures, let along to try and justify their use if my employer would see the X10 trollups. I would be yanked in HR in about 10 seconds.

At first I joked that the X10 Marketing Director was still in high school. But now I think X10 top management; either has some serious character issues or are purposefully trying to accelerate the demise of X10.

..This is ridiculous.†.......... at a glance thought it was porn.†

At a glance... IT IS PORN.

Your right. We need to do something! I guess for me.. I need to do some serious soul searching. I am not a prude by any means. However I DO NOT approve of portraying women [minorities, children, animals, or even bald old white men.. for that matter) negatively... without reason. It's not that the pictures are BAD... it is that the use of those pictures with this type of product line is wrong. X10's use of those photos are insensitive. The ads are demeaning to women in general.

X10 I am respectfully asking you to discontinue your use of risque photos in your ads.

X10.com has always used the most immature, childish advertising schemes available, and people (myself included) have complained for years.† I do have to say that the most recent advertising really has crossed the line.† They don't even bother to show products anymore, just barely dressed women.† The irony is that I've seen advertising for adult product sites that show far less skin that this supposed electronics retailer.

 >*<

That being said, X10.com has never been responsive to customer complaints about it's advertising practices, as it's obviously only gotten worse over time.† So, since they only care about their bottom line, there are two ways individuals can respond:

  • Don't buy products from X10.com
  • Report X10.com as a site containing pornography .....

No. I intend to take the moral high ground. I emailed X10 today... and I will also call.. we all should. Contray to your belief that X10 doesn't listen... I am not completely convinced.

I have used [and also contribute to] X10's forum to my benefit... and X10's deals are the best I have found. Although the X10 Site has become prono-ish... I don't think they are reportable.... yet.

I will complain... by email, by phone, and I might even just write an old fashioned letter.

At the bottom of the x10.com site is a comment section that I have used before to ask them to loose the smut marketing.
The next time I go there it's worse as if they enjoy irritating me.

If you'd like to email X10 it really isn't difficult.. it's almost like they encourage it. At the top of this page you will see a series of links:

I don't think their customer service is any better with this issue than any others.. quite simply, it sucks.  It's very evident they only care about the bottom line, and crossing lines (be it customer service, or porno advertising) appear to be part of their overall business culture.  It's been bad for years, and it's getting exponentially worse.

When I first discovered x10 many years ago, I had a problem getting into the x10 site because it had been flagged by my spam control as a malicious spam/marketing site due to their unscrupulous email campaigns.  Iíve watched for many years while people have complained about various x10 issues.  99% of the time, itís the same outcome.  The issue gets worse.  What good does emailing them do?

Itís too bad really.. x10 has some cool stuff.  But as itís already been pointed out here numerous times, there are many other products that do the same thing, and many other places to get them.  Sure, you can come back here every day wasting time to try and find their daily deals to get a good price.. But is it worth the time and effort?  And when you think about it, why would they all of a sudden be selling a product 5 for 1?  Does that not suggest the actual value of the product in the first place?

Maybe the half naked broads somehow increase this value..

I just sent my email bashing them. I guess it was worth the 2 minutes to write. Even if they don't listen least I feel I did about as much as I can.

You can email the webmaster also:

Some of us have opted for the text only version of the email. †IF everyone goes emailing X10 about the porn, they'll know that the emails are working. †Therein lies the old adage: There's no such thing as bad advertising!

You really want to fix this thing with x10? †Send them 1 email stating that you intend to boycott their websales. †Then go to ebay, or the automated outlet,  or where ever else you please. †

When the web based sales at x10 dry up, they'll change. †Until then, this thread serves as free publicity for x10.com.

(I'll get off my soapbox for now. †Thanks for listening.)

Addendum:
I know that you can't always get the same great deals from the other guys as you can get from X10, but sometimes a positive change requires a little sacrifice.  Check out the affiliate portion of the forum.  I'm sure that any of those fine folks would love you running your purchases through them instead of the main page.

Sorry guys... I can't think that way. How can I suck-up useful information here at the forum... then buy my supplies elsewhere. That doesn't seem right.

I removed my image [avatar] the other day... my first step with disassociation.

To be clearer. Since I have mixed more than one protocol in my setup. I needed a X10Pro XPF. I don't think X10 even has one on their site and most dealers I have seen want >$35.00 for one. My new one was much less costly. I have bought from X10s site things like a MT13A so I could help others with their projects.

You will probably never find any site; but X10s; selling things like 5 LM15A Socket Rockets or 6 HR12A Palm Pads for the price of one.

I think its easier for them to try and attract people through visual aids rather than coming up with decent product that sells itself. Their old decrepid software and hardware is outdated and they don't come up with anything new so they have to sell this stuff with the sexy ads..

Real all time low for x10  :(

That is the impression the ads give isn't it. The fact is:† That X10 has lead the way in home automation for many years. The CM15A interface with all of it's faults is still the best of it's type on the market. I am convinced Home Automation is a niche market.. hardware and software may never sell in volumes that would allow quicker change than X10 has brought. The new half-naked marketing makes X10 look like they are selling "X-Ray glasses" looking for the immature and gullible.

I know I cannot control the actions of those I assocate with... I can only control my associations. I fear the ads reflect poorly on me. I am no longer proud of my association with Home Automation and X10 products.

If it bothers you, you should seriously avoid the tent sale right now and whatever you do DO NOT scroll down to the USB video capture dongle ad. You may faint! ;D
