Title: adding software to my setup
Post by: Brandt on December 12, 2009, 02:51:50 PM
I own a Powerlinc v2 2414u

The only computer I have on 24/7 is a linux based NAS server. (Synology DS209j)

Although I heard that running it off a laptop is a best since it comes w/ ~2 hours of battery backup, and I do have a couple spare windows laptops laying around  ;D

For some reason I guess I don't feel comfortable running my house off windows!!

maybe because i'm a Sun Solaris Unix Sys Admin!

What do you recommened? Linux? Windows? Do I have the right controller?

I've tried Indigo, Misterhouse, and vCrib.

The Smarthome 2414U is an Insteon Power Line Controller.
It can send X10 signals also; but is mainly Insteon.
USB Interface.
Has a RTC and storage for timers that can be downloaded to it.
Not too much software available to control it.
Some software may go through SDM3 [Smarthome Device Manager].

Yeah I had tried vCrib on windows and it uses the SDM. I think its too difficult to get started with that though.
