Basically any 2.4 GHz antenna will work.
The way the Db rating works is the antenna is sending/receiving from all directions.  Picture a big balloon around the antenna with the bottom of the "orb" at the antenna base.  When you raise the Db rating, you are merely pushing down on the top of the antenna.  You are redirecting some of the "talking" or "listening" area outward, and taking it away from the "upper" area.

It should be noted that the supplied X10 video antennas do have some gain already, as they block the signal from the "back" of the little antenna plate and send it all in one direction.

Now the perfect antenna is not an easy answer.  Just keep in mind that you have the same signal, you are just changing the transmit or receive pattern.  Wherver you gain distance or strength, you have to take it away from somewhere else.  I will say to avoid longer antenna cable, as there are great losses there, especially with these high frequencies.

As a public safety two-way radio professional, I hope I didn't sound too much like an engineer, and I know I didn't say "buy this one" but I hope I helped...   :-\

nybuck; Gee I use to work for Motorola. On public safety and commercial two-way radios myself.
Small world.

Yup, me too.

Funny stuff.

I was a ham in high school (and using X10 remote devices)  Then I left it all behind and worked 'the road', until they were looking for someone to run our GE trunk system...  So here I am, a radio-head again!   ;D

I try and keep the vendors honest, and save the state some money by doing some of it ourselves...   ;)

So did I explain "gain" correctly?   ;)

Works for me. If I ever go back to technical training I'm going to plagerize it. How old is that GE system?

Me too!  :)

But not on radios per se'.
I spent a little time in the Pager Division down in Ft. Worth, TX.

It's an EDACS system from 1992.  Still going strong, but difficult to find parts for it...

I had to explain to one tech that the computer that runs it didn't have a USB port, let alone USB 2.0!   ;D

 rofl

EDACS was a great system!

At the risk of hijacking this thread.....  Oh what the heck, too late......   ;D

The PC's used in the system have 4 serial ports, a 3.5 inch floppy, 10 meg SCSI hard drive, and a tape backup... But we opted for the extra $$ to get a VGA display - Some had CGA!  Try to find a CGA monitor these days!

Solid since 1992 - but now are starting to fail.  Time to go P25 trunking...   :'
