Title: DUH - EASY CHEAP SUBTLE audible alerts :)
Post by: orcusomega on January 11, 2011, 03:32:52 PM
I don't know why I didnt read this or think of it sooner, but here goes.

I have been trying to figure ou a way for me to know when certain things are going on, for example checking whether a door is closed, or whatever.  But the chime is annoying, and if my girlfriend is sleeping, I don't want to have a bell go off or a light flash to tell me if everything is OK...  then it dawned on me - just put an empty appliance module into an outlet, and the clicking of that can be your alerting too  -:)

Dunno why I always overthink everything :)

Now if the "Clunk" of the relay doesn't wake her up you are all set.  :'

You could probably wire up an LED to a lamp module, and have that flash. You probably will need to defeat the local current control, though.

I just stuck one behind the dresser - its not a terribly loud click to begin with, and now its noticable, but not in the least intrusive...

I have thought about the LED's, even saving a junk set of Xmas lights to tinker with, but they are a wiring PITA - This just works  I also thought about one of those irrigation control panels with 16 DPDT relays - just too much of a pain.  I have a lot of Cat5 jacks in the house, so I am planning on trying out a small 4 LED pack on a cat5 wire - could prove interesting, but I need to get a few parts first.
