I noticed the cameras have to types of receiver, one is a video receiver and the other an audio/video receiver
However the only usb interface on offer for connecting the cameras to a pc to use in conjunction with the active home and iwhitness software seems to be video only
How do I go about connecting an audio video receiver to a pc and being able to use the active home software to monitor both video and audio from my cameras

Good question , I have never seen reference to audio in AHP.

You are correct here. The VA12 unit only does a video conversion to USB, as the audio was only ever intended as a monitoring service, not to be recorded.
You can record the audio if you wish, by hooking up the audio using an RCA -> 3.5mm headphone jack cable like this:

You'll have to tell AHP to either start an Audio Recording program, or to leave one running. Either option doesn't seem practical and would take up a lot of space very quickly.
There are also other things to worry about, such as local laws in your city/county/region/state/province/etc.

Side bar question for those in the know: How sensitive are the X10 camera's audio pick up's ?
If anything like their low light sensitivity..... ???
