Title: SC503 Maxi Controller availability
Post by: JeffVolp on August 07, 2011, 04:01:28 PM

Does anyone know what is happening to the SC503/PHC02 Maxi Controller supply?  Except for X10 itself, all the distributors I checked are out of stock, and there are only a few listed on eBay.  SmartHome recently discontinued their similar ControLinc Maxi.  Is the Maxi Controller on the way out too?

I hadn't realized it was still available. I have one in my big plastic tub of X10 stuff.... but it was sorta dated back when I bought it a few years ago. Might be a good time to pick up a spare if it's an item you need.

I hope not but it looks like that maybe the case.
I found Automated Outlet still listing them but another on line dealer listed it as Discontinued.
Will have to test my SC503 and make sure it still works. I used it to set my XTB-IIR options sometimes.

Gee maybe my ControLinc Maxi will become a collectors item.  ;D
It actually looks like Smarthome is discontinuing all their X10 stuff as it goes out of stock. They are not doing another production run.
All the 1132 series controllers are now all gone and the Dryer Outlet stuff is almost gone also.

I noticed that too. It would be hard to compete with ebay.

We have half a dozen, going back to that original boxy Sears version.

My concern is XTB mode programming, which uses the 9-8-2-N sequence. (N ranges 1-16.)  It can be done with ActiveHome, but a Maxi Controller is much easier.

Actually, manual control of anything above unit code 8 is a problem without a Maxi Controller.

Maybe we can get lucky and they are designing a new style one. Since all the later modules seem to be using easier to find parts and what some may call more modern cases.  ;D

Thanks for the heads up on Automated Outlet.  I ordered a bunch for those who need one for programming.

Jeff -
You could always just design one on your own, and sell it as another product in the XTB line. ;-)
I'm sure you have a whole list of improvements you would make to it, anyway.

There is no way I could ever produce anything like that for a competitive price.  Components alone would cost me twice what X10 sells it for.

Yes - but for twice the price, I'm sure you'd be providing much more than twice the level of quality and function. ;)

I just received email from one of my customers that said X10 discontinued the SC503 Maxi Controller.  Since it is still on their website, they are substituting the MT13A 64-Event Mini Timer when one orders the SC503 Maxi Controller, claiming it's "close enough".  Obviously, not being able to access half the unit codes is not close enough.

I believe you can't just send addresses with out an On or Off stuck in the command with the MT13A.
Close enough.  B:( That is like my bank saying your savings account is a few thousand short but close enough.  :P

I hope your Automated Outlet order goes through with out a hitch.

I am gong to dig out my ControlLinc Maxi and SC503 and verify they still work.

Smarthome's web site now shows a controller that is similar to their X10 ControlLinc Maxi. Called a X10SC503.

http://www.smarthome.com/X10SC503/Smarthome-X10-Maxi-Tabletop-Controller/p.aspx

I am going to give the manuals a look at. As I am not sure if opening the cover allows you to send all the  X10 House and Unit codes like the older ControlLinc Maxi did.

Disappointment!
It doesn't look like the new ControlLinc Maxi is anything like the old Control Linc, other than outward appearance. Now I have use for a couple more of the old 4071 units. Bummed.

I retired all my X10 Maxi Controllers when the 4071's came out, my have to go down to the the X10 storage room in the basement and dig out a few.  :-\

Yes after further observations. It is stripped 4071 and I feel will not send the House Codes alone. That are needed to program options in the XTB-IIR and other JV Engineering devices.

I know you can create a macro in AHP to send the discrete codes needed to program Jeff's devices.
There might be a way to do it using the SDK (perhaps using SendRawPLC.exe - but I don't know the hex codes needed offhand).

If someone has some time to investigate this, it might be a useful thing to have documented, and perhaps even write a simple GUI interface that can act as a replacement for the Maxi Controller, using the SDK and a CM15A / CM19A / CM11A to send the codes.

Another change with the X10SC503 from Smarthome. Is the older 4071 ControLinc Maxi had a 2 year warranty. The new one ninety days. ???

Gee supply and demand at its finest or plain old greed.  ::)

A quick look at a few of the on line automation dealers. Still finds the SC503 in the $24.99 to $29.99 range.

The seller wants $1000.00 per purchase,  I got one 12 years ago from my local X10 Dealer for 5.95 (plus 2.50 MD sales tax) it was in service until AHP came along since the SC503 isn't listed.   I suspect  NOBODY will pay that price.

Ya think??

Surely this is a joke, a decimal point mistake, or an Amazon vendor fishing for idiots..

Don't two minis ($20) make a maxi?
Title: Re: SC503 Maxi Controller availability

Minis can't do Unit Codes 9-16.
They also can't send an X10 address with out an On or Off tacked onto the command.
Some of the XTB-IIR options are set by sending a sequences of Addresses only.

I picked up some Maxi Controllers while they were still available for new and former XTBR or XTB-IIR customers who need one.

BTW, there is a mod listed somewhere that will allow a Mini Controller to do either 1-8 or 9-16.

I have seen the mod for the older MC460 Mini Controller.
I have not seen any of the replacement MC10A ones. To see if the mod could be used on it or how different it is.
My thoughts are new brand surface mounted controller. Like some of the other new ones use.

bigjohn9944 is showing, he now has more than 10 SC503/PHC02's in stock but the price is quite high compared to the good old days.

I wondered why my Leviton X10 listings on Amazon suddenly started to move, and found all the other listing prices had doubled.  Before I was maybe a couple of bucks cheaper than the other guys, but now my listings were half price.  Since that was barely above my cost after the Amazon fee, I adjusted my prices too.

My SC503/PHC02's are the same price as the Maxi Controllers that Sears sold back in the 80's.  Of course, the dollar is worth a bit less today.

I just checked Automated Outlet, they want $79.68 for a CM15A and only $14.05 for a PHC02, which is the same as an SC503.

The Maxi Controller has shown up on eBay again from three of the major distributors.  So the X10 equipment pipe may be flowing again...
