Title: Missing on-board flash memory

The AirPad reports 2.56gb of NAND flash, but the website and the manual say 4.0gb . I understand about formatted capacities, but that doesn't explain it.

I haven't received mine yet so I can't investigate too much, but I'm guessing that the 4GB spec they list doesn't take into account room for the Android OS and preinstalled apps.

My guess would be the same. 4GB overall for internal flash memory and what you're seeing is available memory after taking the OS etc... into consideration.
Supporting 32GB external memory should be quite ample for mp3 and video files etc... and you can always have multiple micro SD cards for this purpose.  >!

That sound about right around 1gb for housekeeping and OS things.
