Title: UM506 Mod?
Post by: GMAN on November 30, 2011, 12:54:04 PM
Hey all, has anyone investigated or completed? converting the um506 module to solidstate relay in an effort to tame the loud 'clicking' when activated.
The factor has gotten low. I use this with Motion Sensors and my Sprinkler System as the stupid stray cats have decided that my backyard is their litter box in the middle of the night.  G.

I don't know if the latest revion UM506s are different. As X10 was at one time updating modules for easier to find components.
I do know my older ones. Have a sealed switch assembly in them. With two coils. One pulls the big slide switch On and the other pulls it back off.
Guess you could see what the voltage pulse the coils activate with and connect the control pulses to a SSR with the correct current limiting.

I have one I kept that the plastic cam arm broke and I attempted to repair. Thought I'd revisit it and just maybe kill two birds, one stone.

Wouldn't it be easier to use the existing Lamp Module to SSR conversion, since neither UM506 nor Appliance Module would keep an SSR gated ON after the initial ON command?
Just a thought.

Can you post a source for the lamp module to SSR conversion. Thanks.

There are a few on this site.
If you have a newer Soft Start they are different and I have never tried doing one. I have done a few older models with the Sharp Module. Others have used Crydom Modules.
