I do not have a landline phone, all i have are cell phones. A saleman said i could use Activehome to notify me via email to my smartphone if my alarm was activated. is this right? if so, how hard of a set-up is it? what all would i have to purchase? i am running windows 7, will that be ok?

Recent thread touches on email topic over here: http://forums.x10.com/index.php?topic=26356.0 (http://forums.x10.com/index.php?topic=26356.0)

Easiest way is to use voice over IP (VOIP) telephone number ie magicjack, vonage, googlevoice etc.  I noticed that nettalk has announced a new device that works over WIFI.  See http://www.nettalk.com/en/press-releases/20120315-nettalk-world-first-wifi-voip-device (http://www.nettalk.com/en/press-releases/20120315-nettalk-world-first-wifi-voip-device).   Or do dedicated cell phone service with bluetooth bridge like http://www.amazon.com/Cobra-PhoneLynx-Connection-BT-215/dp/B0043D2IBE/ref=pd_sim_cps_1 (http://www.amazon.com/Cobra-PhoneLynx-Connection-BT-215/dp/B0043D2IBE/ref=pd_sim_cps_1)

Other people have had the magic jack working (search forums) However, I had bad luck running magic jack on old pentium III 900Mhz laptop.  It would skip digits while dialing out on on alarm triggers. This would happen if the laptop was in low power state... works if  magicjack app was recently used for a call.   I think the laptop was too slow to accept the speed at which was SC1200 dialing out.

Should you decide to dig up your magicjack dongle, you might consider using GVJack app for a one time purchase of $19.  It converts your magicjack dongle into a google voice service.  Check out the forums over here: http://www.magicjacksupport.com/gvjack-app-converts-mj-dongles-to-google-voice-t11822.html (http://www.magicjacksupport.com/gvjack-app-converts-mj-dongles-to-google-voice-t11822.html)

In my setup I am using googlevoice and OBI100 (VOIP ATA costing $40)

I'm not sure I understand your question?  Why can't you insert your area code make it 10 digit?  If it is more specific question regarding the GV App, you might be better off asking the question in that forum which monitored by the author of the software.  I've never used the app myself.
