Title: Wi-Fi Thermostat Control
Post by: Tuicemen on May 02, 2013, 09:16:33 AM
While working on adding support for Wi-Fi enabled LED lighting for PCC I discovered I could capture code being sent to the device.
This should be true for any Wi-Fi enabled device.
With this in mind I plan to add support to PCC (http://forums.x10.com/index.php?topic=14508.0) for one.
I haven't started to look into these to much but I do know there are several brands out there.
I'd love to hear from anyone using one and read their thoughts on it.

Are you happy with your unit?
Would you get another or a different brand/or model?
If you have it incorporated into your X10 setup then How?

If you don't have one but are looking into purchasing, what brand and why?

It's true for most RF devices. All you need is an RF receiver of the proper type (i.e. ASK or FSK) tuned to the proper frequency.
It's easier for ASK as FSK uses two frequencies both of which must be matched by the receiver. And it's a bit more complicated for some of the more sophisticated protocols like WiFi.

And, while manufacturers tout their encryption algorithms, that's only for the gullible. It adds nothing to security. All that's needed is to capture the over-the-air-signal and play it back exactly as captured.

Hey Tuicemen,

Yes, I am definitely interested; as you and I already spoke about this a few weeks back when I asked if it was possible to use one of these WiFi thermo's.  I was looking at two different Honeywell WiFi Thermostats.

1.) Honeywell Wi-Fi Programmable Touchscreen Thermostat Model # RTH8580WF
2.) Honeywell Wi-Fi 7 - Day Programmable Thermostat Model # RTH6580WF

Main difference is one has touchscreen the other does not.

What I would like to do is have this work in conjunction with PCC in that when the thermostat reaches a certain temp, PCC would turn on or off the ceiling fans depending on the temp.

I am still just using AHP 3.318, all the x10 modules and BVC.  :' I need to take the plunge and incorporate PCC and I really need to get the BlueWatch.  ;)  I really think I will be set then.  :)
'
Cheers,
Nate

Tuicemen,

I have looked at them a little and also am thinking of going the honeywell route if we can get support for them.  I have been using a zwave Tstat that I have not been really happy with but if PCC would support WIFI that would be amazing

I've only just started to look into these and would like to add one to my off grid log home.
I have read where others have used wireshark to capture data form the Honeywell units but no success stories. :(
That being said none reported a failure or what they did with the info they discovered.
