Title: Revolv Home Automation System
Post by: dhouston on January 25, 2014, 10:05:40 AM
The Revolv Home Automation System looks very, very nice. While pricey ($300) it promises easy integration of multiple Home Automation and Home Security platforms with remote access. In terms of capability and versatility, it's much like what I was planning as a DIY project with Zarduino before my health forced me to abandon it.
I have no idea whether they plan to support X10 and would be very concerned about security as all of the supported RF channels have security vulnerabilities.

If I were Authinx, I would explore working with Revolv for X10 support rather than developing their own WiFi based system. Or, it might make for easier integration if they completed their WiFi platform which Revolv could then talk to via WiFi.

The surge in interest in the Internet of Things promises to make HA a much more widespread phenomenon.

I agree the potential is there! I haven't seen or heard of other users in my area yet. But I would like to think that Home Automations time has come.

And this is why you shouldn't buy proprietary hardware...

When you invest in a $300 hub that relies on an outside server to function, you rely on that server existing forever (or as long as you want to use the device).  I had this concern when I bought my first TiVo years ago but was pleased that they survived.  I don't have a TiVo now, but that's primarily due to their strategy to survive (priced me out of the market).  That said, I could have had a $300 paper weight in early 2000s just like the people with Revolv will be in May.

Some people just love cloudy days and intentionally temporary hardware.

Welcome back - how was the surgery?

I don't know whether, when I started the thread, I knew Revolv used a remote cloud server (That's my story and I'm sticking to it.) but I agree whole-heartedly that we need to avoid cloudy skies.

In this case, I think there might be grounds for a massive class-action lawsuit although I doubt anyone read the War and Peace length terms prior to clicking their acceptance and agreement to arbitration for all disputes.

However, it's not only clouds that cause problems as Insteon's recent removal of X10 support from most of their hardware shows.

Some fail to see the big picture, removing support for something usually isn't the best move, especially when you build your rep for including it in the first place.  ::) :'
