Title: Need recommendation for LED/CFL controllers
Post by: gossamer on August 03, 2014, 06:40:34 PM
Hi,

I have a motion sensor set up for the driveway light that was set to also turn on the porch light when motion was detected. The light is currently being controlled by a regular dimmable X10 switch, although I've forgotten which model it is. I've since replaced that regular light bulb with a CFL, and I'd still like to have it automatically controlled by the driveway motion sensor as well as be able to control it from the switch in the house.

Is it possible to do this with either a CFL or an LED?

If the CFL or LED bulb is a dimmable model.
The two wire X10 dimmers that steal power through the load may work. Depending on the exact model bulb being used.
Dimmable CFLs have been reported as being almost impossible to use. Dimmable LEDs may work.
There maybe a thread here on using LED bulbs with X10 dimmers.
A search may find them.
If you don't need dimming and have a neutral power wire in the switch box. An X10 WS13A or X10Pro XPS3 relay type should work fine.

Thanks for your help. It's been some time since I've done it, so I'll have to take the current switch out and see if I have a neutral.

If it is an X10 I doubt it has a neutral connection. Their dimmer models where two wire and stole power through the load.
Though you may find a neutral bundle of wires in the back of the switch box.
The X10Pro XPDI3 uses a neutral.
