second link Looks like a step backwards to me.
Automation to me is coming home and the light comes on automatic.
Fumbling for keys at the front door and yelling for help so a kid inside turns on the lights for you? ::) :'
As if raising a kid isn't expensive enough now they want you to fork out $40 a month so they can press buttons on a phone! rofl
Automation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automation) is to control something with minimal or reduced human intervention.

For the non DIY I suppose the "Intelligent Home" is a solution, but it looks like it is more work, not less.

Actually, it makes more sense for me to install Home Genie on the much more powerful Lenovo Q190 (running Windows 10) already connected to another of the TV's HDMI ports but I'm an inveterate tinkerer. 8)
With the RPi3 being 60% faster, incorporating WiFi & Bluetooth and able to run a version of Windows 10, I expect it to become a more & more popular Home Automation Server (and it seems Microsoft agrees). With WiFi, it really doesn't matter where it's situated as all of my machines speak WiFi and my brain transplant for the CM15A will give it a WiFi option, as well.

The Windows 10 that runs on the Raspberry Pi is only the IOT core. It has no GUI (well, it does, but the screen just shows the system name, IP, and some version information). You can't run GUI software on it.

I realize that but, given how they are pushing Windows 10 into every nook and cranny, I expect MS to provide additional capabilities given the upgraded RPi3.

indicates things may already have changed...
Windows 10 is no more a command line, You can build, run, UI apps on it, graphic applications works on it. and if you are planing to develop Apps for Win10 you can have UI controls and also control GUI (MS has built frame work for the same).

I saw that earlier. I haven't had hands-on with Windows 10 IoT Core but it would appear that, while RPi3 does not run Windows 10 per se, it does give developers tools to create GUIs for IoT applications. That should make it possible to build dedicated apps that will integrate X10 with other SmartHome devices.
It does, however, seem that the hardware is capable of running Windows 10 and it's only MS dragging their feet that prevents that. And, since they are targeting IoT, I think it just a matter of time before they are onboard.
BTW, Element14 did not indicate the RPi3 was out-of-stock when I placed my order but all I received was the Noobs SD with the packing slip indicating the RPi3 was backordered. I'm going to be upset if it isn't the latest version with the IoT core.

Windows 10 will work with a wider range of devices and appliances by integrating new Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) protocols, scheduled to be released in 2017. Additionally, Cortana will allow users to easily automate tasks using a Windows PC, mobile device, Xbox console or Raspberry Pi 3.
