Title: Radio Shack files for Bankruptcy Again
Post by: Brian H on March 09, 2017, 06:56:17 PM
Well this explains why my local Radio Shack store had a big everything on sale and must go sign on the window this morning.

Since it was one of the Radio Shack and Sprint stores. Maybe it will just be a Sprint store in the future.

I was just in a RS store earlier this week for the first time in months.  As expected, this store was about half phones or phone/media player accessories and half everything else.  The component drawers were way in the back and were down to 2 sets.  So, if you need an LED or a resistor that's great because they have exactly one...each.

Oh, and based on the prices, I probably won't be too sorry to see them go.  My dad needed a 3+ way digital splitter for his cable.  They had just what he needed and absolutely gave it away at $25!  Sheesh, I can get a similar splitter at HD or Lowes for $9 and a 1x8 structured splitter for $20.  I wanted to go elsewhere but he just wanted it then.

If only RS had a product people wanted at a price they would be willing to pay...

I always thought RS was high priced, even their components. But at least when Tandy owned them, they had a well balanced assortment of products. I think they blew it when they turned themselves into a phone store.

From memory, the phones were added right around the last time they went bankrupt.  Perhaps that and closing some locations is their last gasp to survive.  Too bad they didn't pay attention to trends and get more into Arduino, automation, drones, etc.  IMO, their prices were always a problem but I'm willing to pay a fee for convenience.  That rate is around 5-20% max.  I'm not willing to pay nearly a 200% markup over other local stores let alone the 1400% markup over monoprice.

Exactly! But why is it we can see these simple facts and the managers at RS do not. I think this is what happens when the bean counters gain control.
Similar happenings at Motorola, and look where they are now. Motorola started the down hill when engineering management was kicked out and replaced by MBA's who did not have a clue about the company's past legacy and culture, nor did they care. Heavy price to pay for very short term gains.  Sigh.
