Title: WM100 is DOA
Post by: toasterking on January 22, 2018, 06:12:36 PM
I haven't seen this reported yet, so I could be the first lucky customer to receive a dead-in-the-box WM100.

I just unpacked my WM100, plugged it into the wall and... nothing.  The LED did not light.  I tried 3 different outlets.  I tried following the instructions anyway to set up the Android app (for the unlikely case of a defective LED, bad solder joint, etc.).  I held the SYNC button for 5 seconds and then tapped CONNECT on the app.  It attempted the connection for about 60 seconds and, as expected, timed out with the "Connection failed!" dialog.  I also tried the hard reset procedure: holding SYNC for 15 seconds.  Still no LED and no response to the app.

I'm fighting the urge to take it apart and perform an autopsy.  I should probably leave the tampering for Authinx to pursue once they receive my return.

Now that is a total bummer.  B:(

Being a hardware type.
I would also be fighting the urge to open it up and look.
It would be best to let Authinx do the dissection so they can give the manufacture the information.

Oh Man, I'd hope not to see some one with a dead unit, but it does happen contact Authinx right away for a replacement.

I fired off an email this morning to the guy looking after the module.
So this way a replacement should get set aside for you.
Did you try unplugging and letting it sit for an hour before trying again?
This seems to work sometimes for electronics (not sure why)

Thanks, Tuicemen.  I sent a message to tech support via the web site last night but wouldn't expect a reply yet.
I tried plugging it in again this morning, just now, but there is no change.  It was worth a shot.

Perhaps shipping damage?  I had one original XTB that had the power transformer sheered right off the board.  Since they were always packed in bubble wrap, it must have taken one heck of a shock to do that.

I would expect these to be tested before being packaged by the manufacturer.  It has two daughter boards attached to the main board, so perhaps one of those loosened up during shipping.  It would be good to know that so corrective action can be taken to prevent it from happening to others.

When I emailed the guy looking after the WM100 I also sent a cc to the owner.
The owner got back to me stating he can't find a support ticket for it. B:(

toasterking, the support ticket was found and a new unit is on its way with a return label so they can see what happened.

Yes, I got an email this morning with a USPS Priority Mail tracking number for the replacement before they even emailed me the shipping label for the return.  That's impressive customer service!  :)% Though I wondered if the message from you had something to do with that. :)

The only bubble wrap included in the original shipment was the standard bubble wrap around the module inside the retail box, which does nothing to cushion the AC pins from the side of the box, so I can see how it could have succumbed to vibration damage if the assembly is sensitive to mechanical stress.  I've been good and haven't taken it apart, so I hope the gents at Authinx do.

Impressive customer service is a real plus. I think this company is serious about X10 and less so about sleazy sales tactics.

I've got to admit, I'm really impressed.

There's just no comparison to X10WTI so far.  I recall ordering a discontinued Maxi controller from the latter from the official product page on their web site.  It did not list the item as discontinued nor out of stock.  They substituted an incompatible item (a digital timer that addressed only half the unit codes and did not allow sending unit codes and function codes separately) without asking or giving any notice.  When I obtained an RMA and returned the module since it was of no use to me, they did process my refund... 8 months later.

The company and its hardware both had such a bad reputation, I kind of think Authinx should have changed the name to clarify the distinction.  Something like neXt10 would have said it all: X10 for the next generation.  (And it almost sounds the same.)  But what do I know about marketing?

I hope my email didn't have anything to do with Authinx's actions though it did get the Owners attention. ;)
Maybe some extra bubble wrap this time  rofl

Either way, Tuicemen, we all owe you a debt of gratitude for your tireless support of X10. I was really starting g to give up on the technology,  but you kept on plugging away at it and pushed the development. Thanks for sticking with it. With the new WiFi unit, the future looks bright, so thanks.

:-[ thanks Knightrider, Authinx deserves most of the praise they never got tired of my pestering. They actually listened to what I suggested and agreed with most of what I was stating.
