Title: New PiX10Hub Buster image
Post by: Tuicemen on January 26, 2020, 11:17:57 AM
I've been working on a installer to install the PiX10Hub to any Linux machine and on any future Linux OS build, it works flawless on my Pi boards and mini PC.
However I'll not post this (the interest & help just wasn't there).
The next PiX10Hub image will however include a version of it and work on (hopefully) any Pi board including the Zero W.
I may at some point post that installer which can be modified to work with any Linux machine and any future build if one wishes.

The new (Buster) image is simular to the PiX10Hub Stretch version 2 in that it includes only a vanilla Homegenie no X10 setup, just factory settings. Since this is a base HG install I'm wondering if like the Stretch version a backup should be offered that includes a simple X10 setup for a CM15 with maybe a couple popular user created programs (not just ones posted on the X10 forums)
When will it be posted? Well that depends on input and interest.

From my point of view I came over to HG from x10 active Home Pro I would guess anyone coming over to HG from X10 AHP would probably want to see X10 pre configured. However I am a win10 user not Linux and really have no Idea what Linux users opinion of this Pi x10 Hub idea would be.

HG has X10 built in.  All you do is enable it by selecting the interface type and add your devices.  I'm not sure how to make it easier.   :o

Unfortunately  some still struggle with this , I don't know why! ::) :' And I'm not sure a backup with X10 preconfigured would help other then add some extra programs which some also struggle with adding.

In any case I have a simple minimal HG X10 Cm15 pre-configured back up available from a fresh buster image.
if users can't figure out how to install this then HG isn't for you. :(

But for someone to actually use HG they must add their own modules.  Having ones in there "pre-configured" actually isn't useful other than to see what they look like.  It doesn't show the user how to add them nor let them try one of their own which won't be set up that way.  Of course, adding a module is explained in the HG help documentation.  A user here also created a step-by-step guide for setting up HG which included pictures and arrows saying "click here".

If a user can't figure out how to work HG to get a basic configuration then they aren't really trying IMO.  If the driver doesn't install correclty or something, that's different.  But sharing your basic setup, although it sounds helpful, is extra steps for the new user as they then have to find the "delete module" button before they even get started.

In the end, if a user isn't willing to invest in learning the very basics of HG (or any other tool), they will never learn or use it.   :'

Very true, however some newbies start off deleting widgets/programs/interfaces only to cripple their setup. They need not delete anything but find the restore backup.
The backup removes all that from the groups and displays 10 usable X10 modules on house code "A" which 85% of users implement, they only have to name them.
The new image loads the HG vanilla setup nothing more/or less.

I can't seem to find that post however my eyes are starting to go. B:(
I'd like to move it to the HG tutorial section to make it easy for newbies to find. If you come across it before I do please, PM me the link.

I haven't looked in a long time and it's possible they posted it on the old HG forum.  They designed the write-up to get an X10 user up and running on HG so it was a great document.  The old forum was backed up to the HG club page but I'm not sure if the attachments were saved.  If not, I can see if I have a copy somewhere.  I'm sure that user was run off when Gene shuttered things since ~90% of the users left or went dark at that time.

Thanks, It would sure benefit new users to have access to that, a copy or even a link to it.

I believe this is an expanded version of that file https://homegenie.club/uploads/default/original/1X/cf3c58b2d772afa008422c331b4c089d4e1d68d4.doc
Mike on the Homegenieclub forum also added a twist with this https://www.dropbox.com/s/8ybc1im6yvsn8a5/HomeGenie%2C%20HA-Bridge%2C%20Broadlink%20RM%2C%20and%20X10%20living%20in%20Harmony.doc?dl=0
