Title: extension cord between camera and power supply
Post by: phillip on January 14, 2005, 01:02:50 PM
After looking thru the large list of cables
on the x-10 site I was unable to find a
cable that would increase the lenght from
the x-10 wireless camera and it's power
supply/romote controler does anyone know
where I would find this Thank you

There are two types of power connections
that I have seen on X10 wireless cameras. Is
yours a 1/8" three conductor type that looks
like a mini stereo headphone connector, or
is it a barrel connector that has a center
hole and a barrel ring? The 1/8" three
position is for the instant on cameras and
the other is the other wireless cameras.

My concern with adding more line to the
cam from power module would be loss or weak
picture. Most likely you could pick up more
cord and adapter plugs from Radios Shack. *
( Let me know if this works.)*
I have and extension cord on my cam for the
last three days in my barn and it works,
but the one I used in the house did not
work well with other stuff plugged in it at
the same time.

Radio Shack sells the same type of cameras
and accessories as x10, it just doesnt say
x10 on it and its not nearly as cheap.  I
called two different Radio Shacks about
getting an extension cord for the power
cord (between camera and power supply) and
they say they dont carry them.

You can make your own. All you need is the
same gage wire and Male female plugs,if you
can not get the same plugs as on your cam
and power module you can get a new set and
cut off the old ones. I am still not sure
about how far you can go before it would
afect the power going to your cam but I
don't think a few feet would make any
difference. I well let you know because I
am going to give it a try.

You can make your own, but depending on the
distance you're wanting to go with it, you
MAY need to run with a thicker wire to
compensate for the voltage drop due to
resistance over distance. Also, the 1/8
stereo-type plug is used on the 'Instant On'
cameras. You want to get your polarity
right, so you can look at the power adapter
and it will tell you whether the center of
the barrel connector is +, or -. In the case
of the stereo type plug, use a volt/ohm
meter and just make sure that your ends are
hooked-up the same if you're not using color-
coded wire. I haven't been looking at small
guage stranded wire, but if you could find
black, red, and blue, use the black for the
base of the stereo connector for your - and
then use the other two colors for your
positives +, making sure they're paired
right. For instance, use red for the tip and
blue for the middle band. I hope this helps.

For what it is worth I went to Radio Shack
and bought some line the same gage as on
the power plug and bought two male and two
female plugs. Cut off old ones and added
the new ones on for a distance of 8' and it
works ok.

go to radio shack. I got a 16 foot Shielded
Audio Extension Cable. Radio shack # on
package is 42-2493. It is a 1/8" stereo
phone plug that fits 1/8" stereo phone jack.
In other words it has a male end and a
female end. Carries both aodio and video.
Mine works fine with ninja pan and tilt.I
think it was about 7 or 8 dollars. Good
luck!!

The system from time to time gives an error
and posts the same message more than one
time. Has happened to me a few time also.

My dog pulled the power supply wire out of
my instant on camera. I figured no big deal
to open the camera and rre wire it but the
only wires I see internally is the shield
and the red wire. Where does the white wire
from the power supply go?

In mine the Red is spliced to a red going
through the main board into the upper camera
assembly. The white is on a solder pad on
the main board next to the hole where the
red goes through. Label on  board VCC. Your
unit may or may not match mine.

Thanks Brian that was it. Poor solder joint
and it pulled clean off the VCC pad leaving
no wire strands to see. Thanks again!!

I did an install last week with a 20'
headphone extension from radio shack.  The
picture from that cam is better than the
three FloodCams in the install.  It's only
low voltage DC power.  So it should be good
to extend up to 100' if necessary.  After
that or more than 3 extensions I would worry
about getting thicker cables and sheilding
the connections with foil.  Always cover any
extension with electrical tape for
weatherproofing and to be less visible.
Instead of making your own thicker cables,
you could use a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter and use
the 1/4 extension cables.  Of course if you
extend the wire over 50' you will probably
need a signal repeater which costs about 70
bucks.  The only thing on the site I
consider to be overpriced.  And you can't
get bulk or combo deals on those.  I'm
hoping X-10 reads this and offers some.  I
would like to expand my biz to large estate
homes that don't have to worry about people
coming close enough to their house to pickup
their cameras.
