Title: Wireless Performance
Post by: jeff h on January 31, 2005, 08:53:04 PM
I have a 2.4 GHZ wireless Lan (G) and two
2.4 telephones.

Is there any chance that I will get good
performance out of the wireless cameras.
Or, should I just punt and get the corded
ones.

I have a huge attic and it would be easy to
run the wires.  It's just that X10 always
offers the wiress cameras with great deals -
the corded ones seem to be the step-children
of their marketing.

Also, assuming that the wireless ones are
ok, what's the real range in a house.  I've
been having RF issues with outdoor motion
sensors with AHP.  Is the 2.4 video range
about the same or better.

I've purchased a RF transponder for AHP.
But, I'm guessing there isn't an equivalent
for the cameras.

I probably need to go about 30-45' from
external walls to the center of the house.

Thoughts?

I have no problems with my W-LAN and my X10
Cams, only my AT&T 2.4 phone.

My wireless 2.4ghz access point, microwave
and 2.4ghz phone all cause some sort of
interference with X10 cams.  It is minor
and I can live with it.  I only have the
wireless network turned on when I am using
the laptop, and the phone and microwave
only cause an issue when in use.  So, most
of the time the picture is clear.

You should only get interference when your
Laptop is transmitting.  Your AP you should
be able to leave on.  My AP and X10 are on
the other side of the house and have no
problem with interference as long as I stay
out of the rooms where x10 is.

My AP is on 24x7 - Kitchen computer - but it
sounds like I can move around the channel
and possibly avoid the X10 stuff.

My wireless phone is 2.4 spread spectrum -
which sounds like it's an issue.  But, I'm
looking for a security cam - and we don't
talk on the phone much at night.  So, if
it's only during "in use" times.

I'm not feeling good about this though.  My
AHP is not picking up Motion Sensors outside
the house.  The RF Repeater has helped the
rmotes inside the house - but not the Motion
Sensors.  I wonder if the cameras will be
bad too - and no RF Repeater is available
for them.

I'm really leaning towards wired cameras.
But, I still need the motion sensors to work
to get what I want out of them.  Until they
work - I'm not moving forward with anything.

Bummer....

I had bought a bunch of X10 when I started
my house so I am going to try to make it
work, however I found a cheaper and better
way to mix X10 and multiple video
monitoring.  you can reach me directly
