Title: extending wires from camera to AC adapter
Post by: todd t on January 25, 2006, 06:16:57 PM
I'm connecting a couple of X-10 wireless
cameras under the eaves for a friend.  She
does not have any outside receptacles.

Can we splice into the wire going from the
camera to the AC wall adapter?
Suggestions?  Maximum distance?

It is a small house so the range shouldn't
be a problem.  I just don't know where I'll
be able to plug in.

Thanks.

I've done that many times, just be sure to
keep the polarity the same.

it should work just fine, remember
though...  the longer the wire (50ft+)
creates a small voltage drop.
If the unit req. 1volt to operate the
camera and you add 200ft wire with the
power supply output of say 1.2volt the
200ft wire may drop the voltage by 0.3volts

very unlikely to get a drop though in what
your doing....  try it :)

I looked into this as I wanted to run a
500ft wire for one camera, but it could be
too far for that.

I extended an anaconda camera about 300 ft
beyond the orginal 60ft with no trouble

If you do splice into the power wire - will the cameras work independently - will the remote switch them and will they interfere with each other?

I have a backyard camera working and I want to put up a webcamera 20' higher - that will require a 30' wire - so. . . I can splice into the existing camera wire (all three wires?) and then run the wire up the pole to the other camera?

Thanks for any help you can give and sorry for possibly repeating parts of the questions and answers.  <G>

The switching of the cameras is done with the plug in power cube with the house and unit dials. As long as the X10 PowerLine signal can get to the power cube. You should be able to control it. That is for selecting a camera. Something like the Ninja Pan and Tilt switch units by the powerline but pan and tilt by an RF signal to the base. So distance from a remote to a pan and tilt may vary if distance is made greater.
