Title: can't i just use active home for security?
Post by: anonymous on June 02, 2005, 10:43:08 PM
This is probably a naive question, but
can't a person just set up some active home
macros that work with door/window sensors
and motion detectors that cause the same
reactions as the security alarm items?
What is the advantage of using the security
line of products that do not work with the
automation control?  I don't even have a
land line, so the ability to call out would
be of no use to me.  I could just hook an
alarm up that turns on with a switch, could
set up a couple of flashing lights, could
turn on all lights at full blast, .....  I
would rather send a message to my cell
phone thru the computer than try to call on
a land line.  I don't unlock any
doors/windows or the garage door with
automation, so the only security risk seems
to be turning my lights on an off if
someone wants to play with codes around my
house.

Active Home as in cm11a or Active Home Pro
as in cm15a? The security sensors all use a
security code in their transmissions. I
believe both the cm11a and cm15a will ignore
those messages. My cm15a did process some of
the security messages not all of them but
only when running a Mac program called
Indigo.

i use active home pro with cm15a.  i already
have several motion detectors that turn on
lights in the house.
i was a little surprised that the x10
security doesn't just work with ahp.  the
only additional items i wanted to add would
be some window sensors and a siron.  a siron
would be easy to add.  i wasn't aware that
the window sensors might not work with AHP.
I might have to rip some motion sensors
apart and wire them as window sensors if the
window sensors do not work with AHP.
If I wanted a seperate security system then
I would go with a hard wired system that
doesn't rely on ac power.
