Title: Touch Tone Controller
Post by: Duck69 on August 20, 2006, 12:06:30 AM
The Touch Tone Controller TR16A works with touch tone phones.
Does anyone know if it will work with a cell phone ?

Yes. I call mine from my cell phone all time time.
I use mine on a dedicated HC for macros only. e.g. Exit macro, Welcome macro, All lights on macro, Flash lights, etc. I find the macros to be far more useful than just a direct control for individual items.

As long as you can send the touch tones from the cell phone it should be fine.

Ditto what steven r said.  I also use a dedicated house code and macros except for the power control module for the TR16A which is on the same house code but unit code 10.  Theory being that all the other unit codes are single digits so the two digits on the power control are less apt to be punched in error.  The reason for the power module is that I only turn ours on when we're not home so callers don't have to listen to the three beeps when we are home.  This works because I have macros that "know" when we're away, one for a short time and another for multiple days.  Works great from my cell phone but I miss the audible feedback.  It could be turned on but I don't like it for anything but X-10 control.

Only problem is the single digit touch tone "0" is used for UC 10.

What has audible feedback?
The beeps on the unit require me to keep a cheat sheet with me. I use the memo field in my phone for each number. I enjoy out geeking people by pulling out my phone and using voice dialing to control my lights. e.g. Saying "Shutdown" to my phone turns off lights, makes sure the coffee pot was turned off and shuts the garage door.

steven r: You're right about UC 10.  Now that you mention it I realize that I've been happily punching in "10" and the TR16A was ignoring the "1" and only hearing the last digit "0".  Another theory bites the dust.

As to audible feedback.  I've been using X-10 telephone transponders since they first came out and between the first dedicated remote for them and POT set control for the later ones have always been used to hearing some kind of tone when I pushed a button.  My more recent, small, cell  phones haven't produced a tone on a button push unless I programed them to and it took me a while to pay attention to the screen to see what I was doing.  No practical problem now, since the learning curve is long over, but I still miss it for this application.
