The most recent release of ActiveHome is  at  http://www.x10.com/support/support_soft1.htm

It ought to install without a problem on Win XP but it won't necessarily be 100% trouble free.

The CK11 is a serial device (it used to be the CM11A) and there have been reports that certain motherboards give serial ports trouble under XP.  If Active Home 1.42 installs OK and XP does not see the CK11 or if it keeps appearing and  disappearing, then you have one of those motherboards and your only recourse is to upgrade to Active Home Professional and the USB CM15A interface.

Once good thing is that  Active Home Pro will import the .x10 files from Active Home.  Back them up, and your settings will import, so you don't loose them.

Sounds like you may have one of those motherboards that doesn't like serial ports.   I've never heard of a PC that refused to run a setup program.  You can try to get into Windows Safe Mode and see if it fully installs, then reboot into full mode and see if the CK11A has been recognized by Windows.

I don't believe ActiveHome even looks at the serial ports during installation, so it's too soon to condemn the motherboard.  I assume you have administrator privileges when attempting the installation.

This sounds like a serious Windows or system problem, however I abandoned Windows as my normal operating system years ago and am unqualified to offer any suggestions for diagnosing or fixing it.

It will check serial ports by default. There is a check box to force it to go to one port and not search.
I have seen many reports of XP and SP2 not liking Active Home. Though in my case it was on my XP before I added SP2 and it was OK other then the known glitches. Like communications just stop and you have to restart AHP.
flintdog; I have seen a report that loading from the 3 floppy disk set sometimes works when the CD didn't. Long shot but may help.
