X10 comparison questions
« on: October 20, 2006, 11:26:01 AM »

I was looking at purchasing the X10 for my home and googled to look at other options.  I came across http://cgi.ebay.com/129-Piece-Wireless-Home-Security-System-Burglar-Alarm_W0QQitemZ160039570337QQihZ006QQcategoryZ41969QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem that system on ebay.  I spoke with the guy, who supposedly works for ADT and said he had the system designed because the X10 he used to sell lacked some features he wanted.

Has anyone tried this or looked into it?  I can't seem to find any information on it.

I've gone through the archives here and found some great information.  Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Home security is a huge subject. There are many varieties of of equipment available on the market. My advice is that you take your time and learn about the field before investing in any equipment.

Consider joining some home security forums to discover what people are doing. Use Google to dig up more.

You have hard wired systems, wireless systems, and hybrids. Various sensors are available for specific kinds of applications. Control panels act as the brain for the systems, coordinating a multitude of activities, including intrusion detection, fire alarm, communications, arming and disarming, timing functions, zone definitions, zone bypassing, entry delays, and substantially more.

When you are ready, you may wish to consider purchasing one of the popular medium capacity control panels and an initial set of associated components. Indoor and outdoor high powered sirens will discourage many intruders. Voice dialers can be used to call 911 for either intrusion or fire alarms. X10 equipment offers good control over both exterior and interior security lighting. Typically, a good alarm system will offer substantial flexibility and growth potential. So you will be able to modify, expand, and adjust features and performance to suit your requirements.

In general, monthly monitoring costs should be avoided.

My $.02:  Most jurisdictions would rather shoot YOU than allow you to have any dialer (voice or otherwise) dial 911 direct!

In the real world, the only constant is change.

If they don't shoot you. They may charge you a FEE for a false call.

That is an interesting system. Wonder if it is compatible w/ X-10 products like door/window sensors, on-alert etc. ?

I have very happy w/ my x-10 system because:

1. I have a small house, no range problems.
2. I cannot run wires through filled block walls with no basement or attic.
3. I do NOT want the (very slow) police arriving and charging me for the inevitable false alarm (although i haven't had one).

Features of this ebay system are nice, but there is very little info there (no link to manual). Does it turn lights on and off like x10? I've read this is a good protective feature. Don't know if this uses the same wireless frequency as x-10, but it appears everything (except the console) has old-fashioned looking steel extending antennas (even the keychain remotes).

Since you have called, can you get a link to the manual and find out about x10 compatibility?

Also, I see no remote sirens, and 85db at the console is most likely not enough. (This makes me think it is not x10 compatible, because it has no way to trigger remoter sirens.) EDIT: He USED to have an extra "wireless" siren w/ a flashing light that you could "plug into any outlet", sounds like possible X10 compatibile.

Of course, for the the best security you would want to go w/ a MUCH more expensive wired system.

GLT

P.S. The feedback was also good from the people who got these, but on an item like this durability may be a question and what works at the time of the feedback may not later.

PPS: Is the original post  a real post or an ad? And X10 has a WARRANTY, with this guy "All sales are final".
