X10 and GFI
« on: November 26, 2006, 11:10:38 AM »

I hope this is the right category. Move as appropriate.

Ok, I want to control my outdoor low voltage landscape lights with x10.  I have AHP with the USB controller with a bunch of lamp and appliance modules working.  My outdoor lights are hooked into a 200 V transformer that is plugged into a GFI circuit outlet on the outside of my house.  Originally, the circuit starts at the panel, goes to a GFI outlet and the feed from the GFI outlet is split into two legs.  One leg goes to the front of my house and other leg goes to the rear of my house.  My first modification was to tap into the leg going to the front of my house and install a WS13A switch.  This did not work as the GFI tripped immediately.  My second modification is to put the WS13A between the panel and the GFI outlet.  This works and controls the lights via x10 but it also means the rear GFI protected outlets are controlled by X10.  I guess I could install another GFI outlet and go Panel - WS13A - GFI - front outlets for the front and Panel - GFI - rear outlets for the rear.

Is there a better way?

I have the exact same setup.  I personally don't mind that the switch controls both of my outdoor outlets (the GFI and the other downstream plug after the GFI).  So, I have: panel - switch - GFI - other plug.  But I do understand why you'd want to control them seperately.

My question for you is, did you have any problem with the X10 switch performing the OFF command?  If I manually hit the X10 switch the low voltage lights plugged into my GFI outlet turn on and off just fine.  If I give the ON command from Active Home they also turn on just fine.  But if I give the OFF command from Active Home they do not turn off.  I have to manually press the switch.  This means that my outdoor lights turn on at night but not off.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Sounds like this can turn on but can't turn off deal is common.

I have a post here about the same situation but different hardware.
