(And yes, I'm a newbie who didn't search. I have no idea what to search on.)

Here's the thing. Tenants keep dropping furniture behind my apartment building.
Maybe once a month a sofa or desk is out there, and it costs me $50-$100 to have it hauled away.
So what I think I would want is a camera with motion detector, a tape recorder that also turns on only when needed, and preferably it would loop so that I'm not changing tapes every day.
No live monitor, no audio, no remote capability, no computer involved.
Is that it? What are these parts called? Is the tape machine something I can get from the camera seller or do I have to find someone else to sell that to me?
Thanks for any help.

X10 cameras require a Windows program called Actrive Home Pro with the proper plug-ins for cameras to control them.  I don't think you can copy what the cameras see to a tape system, so you may be in the wrong site here.

Do a Google search for exactly what equipment you want, you may get a better idea, or call a secuity company where you live and they may have what you want.

The closest one on the x10.com website seemed to be this one, but it seemed like overkill. Way to many cameras and tilts and frills.

Are you saying even if I had all that stuff I'd still have to buy a dedicated computer?

With the parts in that kit, you would not require a PC.

You just hook the receiver & the VCR Commander to a VCR to control the recording.

From the parts listed in that kit, you do not need the Pan & Tilt stuff and of course, only one camera.

Basically all you need is:

  • A Transceiver
  • A VCR Commander
  • A VCR
  • A Motion Detector
  • A Camera:
    • If wireless, you need a Receiver
    • If wired, then it will plug directly into a VCR

Just thinking about this a little more.... If you go with a wired camera (which generally do not come with an addressable power supply), then you don't need a Transceiver either. You just leave the camera on 24/7 and let the motion sensor control the recording via the VCR Commander.

This way too, you could look around for a better night vision camera to use (it wouldn't have to be X10 controllable).
