Very weird problem with lamp module
« on: May 11, 2008, 02:24:50 AM »

Greetings!

I am experiencing an extremely weird issue with a radioshack lamp module. Sometimes it will work as it should, however if it's been on long enough, it suddenly becomes uncontrollable. Now here's where the term "weird" comes to play. I can control this module IF I am controlling another module at the same time, It will also respond to ALL LIGHTS ON/OFF commands, but not to any ON/OFF/DIM commands sent to it alone. Unplugging it for a bit, then replugging it, solves the problem for awhile. Is the module on it's way out or can this be fixed?

It acts like it maybe going bad. Could be temperature related as it warms up it starts missing commands.
First you are using a standard light bulb and not someting like a CFL are you? Some non standard bulbs can start making noise as they warm up.

The unplugging it for awhile does tend to support the idea of a thermal problem of a dying module.

Perhaps just for my curiosity, try setting it to another UC. Just turning the dial might  make a difference if contacts are oxided. The symptoms you describe are like it thinks it's a different UC than you think it is.

Brian H: I am using standard lamps with this.

Steven R: Tried swapping the UC between it and the overhead lighting above the PC desk, and sure enough, now it works again.

Let us know if it continues to work after it is in use for awhile. Also if works if you change the UC back.

If it would be a major inconvenience if it did fail again, go ahead and buy a new one to have as a spare.
