Automating 250V 30A Air Conditioning & Heating Unit

I would like to automate the Air Conditioning & Heating unit in my apartment.  The master plan is to be able to hook up a temperature sensor to be able to turn it on and off based on that.  At the least though, I'd like to be able to control it with a remote.

The plug says 250V 30A, and looks like this:

Any suggestions on how I might be able to control something as heavy duty as this?

The Heavy Duty Appliance module HD243 has this plug configuration!
However you may wish to look at some of the x10 capable thermostats available from Smarthome  or other manufacturers

I had looked into the HD243; however, it says its only rated to 240V 15A.

I would be concerned that my Air Conditioner may be too much for this device, since the wall outlet says 250V 30A.  I don't want to burn the place down!

I'm gonna to look closer at the Air Conditioner tonight.  Even though the wall outlet is rated at 250V 30A, maybe I'll be lucky and the Air Conditioner is less than that.


Anymore suggestions/ideas?

The diagram of the NEMA plugs and receptacles shows two. The 6-15R and mate 6-15P 240 volt 15 Amp. 6-30R and 6-30P 240 volt 30 amp. Unfortunately it does not give dimensions of the pins and total circumference. My guess is they are NOT the same and your plugs615P.gif I believe is of a 6-15.
I have not seen a 30 amp X10 Module to fit a 6-30 outlet.
Another way to go would be a standard appliance module controlling a heavy duty wired in contactor with a rating of 30 or more amps at 240 volts.
You may want to try and find the physical specfications for a NEMA 6-15 and a 6-30. My gut says the 6-15 will not fit or be the same as a 6-30.

Notice the 6-30 has a center hole diameter of 2.15". I believe the 6-15 is around 1.25"
