How to tell if a WS12A
« on: June 03, 2008, 01:19:19 AM »

I got a WS12A and tried to wire it up today and had zero luck getting it to work.

I have a single ceiling light fixture. It has 2 100w incandescent light bulbs in it. It is normally connected to wall dimmer switch. I removed the dimmer switch and attached the wires to the blue and black wires on the WS12A. I turned the power back on at the breaker and tried tapping the WS12A switch to make it come up and no luck.

So, I pry-ed the rocker off and set the code and I noticed the tiny on/off switch was not correctly put together. There's a kind of t-knob slider switch that sticks out of the main unit and then a sliding piece of plastic that is supposed to hook under the T and is basically there to bring the on/off switch to the bottom of the rocker. Except, the piece of plastic was NOT under the T meaning it had no effect if you slid it back and forth.

I fixed that and put the rocker back and tried the switch in both positions but no luck. Tapping the rocker did nothing.

I tried swapping the blue/black cables but still no luck.

I futsed with it for about 20 minutes. Reconnected the old dimmer, that still worked, re-connected the WS12A and still no luck getting the lights to turn on.

Any ideas? Is it a bad WS12A or is it something else?

It maybe defective as the old dimmer worked and the new WS12A didn't. That small slide switch breaks the power to the load for safety during bulb replacement.  If it is not making connection when slid to the on position the lights will not work.

So I futsed which it some more. Opened the back to see if any wires were disconnected. Pressed the button that is usually below the rocker hard to see if maybe it was not seated correctly. (I had that rocker off). I hooked it up using alligator clips to a desk lamp and it started working. No idea if it was just something was loose or what. I reconnected it to the actual light I wanted it to control and it's all good now.
