NooB - AHP shutting down with Windows error message
« on: November 28, 2008, 07:24:04 PM »

Hello to all!

First time here, so complete NooB!

All software and plugins installed ok, can open most tabs/windows, add rooms, add modules, etc. Can even turn things on/off, but just learning, so long way to go.

My problem is when I go into Add Macro, or attempt to open the "Hardware Configuration" selection.
In both cases the following Windows error comes up, and of course AHP shuts down:

AppName: activehm.exe    AppVer: 3.0.0.236    ModName: ahp.dll
ModVer: 3.0.0.236    Offset: 0006464c

I am running Windows XP Pro, with all updates and hotfixes installed.
FireFox is primary browser
AMD dual core 64x2 5600, blahblahblah

I do have the Smart Macros plugin installed.

This was all original install; not an upgrade from an earlier version, so everything should be 'fresh'.

Any ideas??

I did a search on the board for "ahp.dll", but could not see anything applicable to this issue.

Thought I would show up here and say hi with my questions before heading to tech support email.

Thanks!

Try this link!
apparently reinstalling a dll solves the issue for some or you can try the workaround (running a watchdog program).

Thanks for the reply, but...

Followed the link, got a (slightly) newer MSVCR71.DLL:

Old file dtd 2/20/2003
New file dtd 1/12/2004

Renamed old file, copied in the newer file, rebooted.

Still no joy. Went into AHP > TOOLS > HARDWARE CONFIGURATION
and it still comes up with the "Please tell Microsoft about this problem." error screen.

The "Hardware Interface Configuration" window actually does come up, so I can read the defaults that are in the system, but of course when I cannot do anything with it as the entire program closes the minute I close the error window.

Hi Donimo,
In my early attempt to get AHP setup on my systems, XP or Vista, I too had many crashes, lost count and lost track of types. I did find that once you have Windows working normally with all the updates taken care of and especially any drivers for your system is most important, that most of the crashes that do occur in AHP is due to the last setup of either Timers or Conditions. So care must be maintained with all setup of AHP. Even to this day, at times I may change a Macro to suite my needs better and end up crashing AHP.
I never take a step without a saved File, thumb drive type is recommended since I have seen the original file on the hard drive been corrupted by a crash in AHP before. When a crash does happen, then I take steps back on the last change I made and most if not all the time it comes out to be a minor correction on the Macro due to either overstepping another macro or the way the Macro was laid out or just did not agree with AHP attitude ( Mine has a personality too). With the Activity Monitor you can sometimes see where the crash may happen if you have it opened at the time. BTW even when the crash does occur, before you hit don't send, you can still click on AHP in the background. A little more info to help think about. good luck.

Babalou,

Thanks for the 'experienced' reply!

I haven't been able to really develop any macros or (especially) timers, because every time I try to build a timer, It asks me to set the correct country/location info in the Hardware Configuration Menu!

So I really can't get to step one of doing anything useful.

As for being able to check behind the error message??, well no, not on my system anyway! That error window is foreground and it will not let me do anything with the background AHP app. In fact, when I tried to move the error window out of the way to see what was behind it, it left a 'copy' of itself there! Now I have two copies of the error window! Never seen that before; anyway the AHP app is entirely frozen and the only thing possible is to shutdown the error window, which immediately closes AHP. I did it both ways: Send to Microsoft and Don't send. Same result.

Thanks again.

RU North American or Other location?

I wonder If FireFox has any ill effects against AHP, Maybe someone here can relate to that?

Did AHP ever work properly prior to setting up any macros or timers with just a simple room setup?

When you first installed AHP, did you or were you able to setup the Hardware Configuration first.

Start with a new install, make sure you follow the full erase of AHP and all plugins. If the change in the dll did not a make a difference then just leave it be and take one step at a time and see what happens then, if all that has not been tried yet.

Oh yeah, Thanks for the "Experienced Reply" title, the experience is made up mainly of chain smoking due to the endless frustrations with X10 has given me,
and Still loving every minute of it.

Domino Like BaBaLou Ive tested AHP on many OS but not Vista (yet).
Problems for me most always come after Updates or plug-in installs. I found it best to always save the install files to the harddrive before installing never install (run from the net).
I don't know if you read anyother forums but you may wish to check this link as well AccessHomeAutomation
If You can get the 2 files mention they maybe helpful in your situation! ::) :'

Back in the "ole days" (and actually I still run my HA computer on XP).... you would need to remember to set a restore point before allowing updates. Then... if the update caused problems... you could restore to the set point. Vista does that automatically... or can be set to automatically create restore points.

Using restore points can de-skill trouble shooting and repair.... and save hours.

To all that replied, THANK YOU!!

Now for my bonehead of the month self nomination...

I had decided to go ahead and do the reinstall thing, so went into the CP to remove the program, BUT, it wasn't in the list! So checked in the Start > All Programs list, not there either!! Whatthe**!

I had been using a desktop icon to start the program, had never checked for a proper install because it had (mostly) been working, could control flood lamps on/off, program SocketRockets, etc!

Next step was to run the SETUP program to do a "Custom Uninstall", but when I ran it, it acted like the AHP was not even installed, with only a notice about the directory already existing. So I just went through the install process to see what would happen.

It installed normally! I got it listed in the Program files and of course in the CP. AND, now I have no problems with HARDWARE CONFIGURATION. Things are cool.

To complete the whole embarrassing tale of boneheadism, I checked my CM15 batteries, and sure enough, NONE were installed. Then I remembered I had a made a mental note (so much for those!) to myself to pickup some AAA batts, but somehow never did...sigh

After doing all the stuff I shudda done during the initial install, I now have a (as far as I can tell) normally functioning AHP program.

I did a quickie macro to fire off my PowerHorn in House Code D by one of my (3 total) dual Flood motion detectors (PH508) with House code B. I got a ton of SocketRockets to install and setup, but they should be easy after all this other stuff!

So, there is my (highly embarrassing) confession. Thanks again for ALL your comments and help; they helped me get back on track. I have some other technical questions, but I will start a new thread in the appropriate sections. For now I must slink away and hope I won't run too bad a gauntlet getting outta here...!

 rofl                           rofl                               rofl

As if non of us here have not done something like that before. It always seems the simplest things that can make X10 act up. AHP is very delicate as well as the CM15A, but if everything is working correctly, then the system will be flawless ( almost ). Glad to help.
