The motion dectors that come with the x10 systems will a pet cause them to activate?

Yes!
Careful placement of them can minimize  or eliminate that issue!

What do you mean by carefulll placement?

Well you can mount them upside down so they see more upward then towards the floor where pets tend to be!
It may take some playing to get the correct placement!
Also you can block out part of the sensor to limit its field of view! There are many posts covering this tactic!
