DS10A average battery life
« on: January 31, 2009, 12:02:50 PM »

Hey guys,

I just installed a DS10A, to check if my garage door is open/close.

Based in your own experience... how often the batteries need to be replaced for new ones ?

Thanks !

Based on my experience... I'd expect a couple years (at least) out of the batteries.

Thanks Dave for your answer !

So, a couple of years ?

This means that the DS10A is not constantly transmitting, right ?
Does it just transmits when there is a change in its state (from open to close or close to open) ?

A couple of years is what I've got... and have heard the same from others too. The DS10A doesn't constantly transmit but it doesn't just wait for a status change ether. About once an hour the DS10A checks in [with the security console] by sending a "heart-beat signal" that tells the console "I'm OK".

The heart-beat is sent even if the DS10A is used with AHP and OnAlert (and NOT a console). The units just don't require much power.

Thanks again Dave....

Your answer (with the "heartbeat" explanation)  triggered another question...  :D

I had to restart my computer a few minutes ago (the computer that runs AHP).

Before restarting it, in my AHP console, I was able to see that the DS10A module was in an "open" state.

After I restarted the computer, I restarted AHP.... but now the DS10A module is shown as "closed"...  and the truth of the matter is that the contact is "open"... so, after restarting the computer, AHP is not showing the right status...

I'm sure that there is no way to "poll" the DS10A... (right?)

But in about an hour from now, and thanks to the "heartbeat", will AHP change and show the correct state ?

Thanks again Dave !

That all sounds right.

That also sounds correct. One of the problems with reboots.
