XPD3 Outside
« on: December 21, 2009, 08:54:24 PM »

Hey all, got a quick question problem...I have a XPD3 switch outside in a outside electrical box working fine untill today! Everything was good I had local control if needed and also through ActiveHome but now I only have local control. Does having it outside not a good idea, I live in Canada where summers are hot and winters are cold but the switch is only 6 months old.

My idea is (if this will work) can i have a XPD3 inside and a off the shelf 3way switch out side OR do I have to have XPSS switch for 3way control? which again would not help because I would have a switch outside that has electronics inside it

Thanks

Has anything changed in the house electronically? That maybe effecting the X10 signal to the XPD3.
One question. Does you XPD3 have soft start? Where the light ramps up and down when turned on or off.
There are no electronic parts in the XPSS except a manual switch. That triggers the XPD3 over the control wire.

Missed part of your original question.
No you can't use one standard three way switch and the XPD3.
I will look around and see if I can find temperature specifications for X10/X10Pro modules.
Reason I asked about anything changing. We have seen things like I temporarily moved something to connect some holiday decorations.

The only real answer im looking for is has anyone used one of these switches outside with luck ( knowing that right on the back label it says inside use only )
also is there a way to test it to see if its dead?

Do you need the outside switch location. Because if you can get by without it just hardwire it through and use the switch indoor location for control.  maybe use an outdoor eagle eye outside or something.  you might even be able to change out the outdoor switch for a receptacle there should be plenty of wires their.  We can walk you through it, if you don't know how to change it out.  You do have some options.

My X10 Powerhouse Applications Manual says 0-52 degrees C. Though the electronics in the module generates a small amount of heat. So it maybe OK slightly below 0 degrees C.

Do you have any other power line controllers. That you could maybe try in a different outlet. Maybe closer to the XPD3 to test it.

Is the XPD3 controlling Incadescent Lights?
