Scope Connection to See X10 Signals
« on: July 01, 2010, 09:07:07 AM »

Hello,
I would really like to find a datasheet or pinout for the 78561 IC.  Please let me know if you have found one.
Thank you,
David

Scope Connection to See X10 Signals
« Reply #1 on: July 01, 2010, 09:19:05 AM »

Hello,
I have read quite a few ideas about the best way to connect an oscilloscope to "see" X10 signals.  My interest is in using the scope to measure the X10 signal amplitude to help in troubleshooting an area in my home where X10 modules will not respond to X10 commands.  Seems best to connect the scope probe to pin 1 of the 78561 chip in a LM465 module.  Is the signal referenced to the AC line neutral or hot?  What are your thoughts and suggestions?
Thanks,
David

I merged your two posts together since they were directly related. It's best to keep all information & replies for a single topic within one thread.

Is the LM465 the newer soft start model with the surface mounted IC or the older Dip through hole?
I believe the 78561 is a custom made IC for X10 and data maybe real scarce. It was the one in the older model LM465s.
There are links to the older LM465 with the 78561 schematics here:
There is also a link to an X10 scope adapter on the same link as the schematics.

The schematic from S.M. Bloom LM456 module seems to be broken in the above link

There are schematics here and seem to be ok. Including Steve Bloom's LM465 schematic.

The AC line is the common connection on the older lamp modules.
I have a rough sketch of the new soft start ones. They use a Sonix SN8P2501BSB surface mounted controller IC.

I personally have used an X10Pro XPCP phase coupler to look at X10 signals on the power line. One of the 120 volt connections has a line cord on it the other set has a set of binding posts where I connect a scope and 10 Ohm load. The XPCP has two isolated windings on a tuned to X10 frequency transformer in it.

I now have a JV Engineering XTBM.
