Noob question. Sorry.
« on: October 25, 2010, 06:10:58 PM »

Believe me, it pains me to do this, but I appear to be unable to find the answer on my own; nor a more appropriate place to ask a question like this.

I'm trying to just do a simple power outlet control. On/off for an on/off appliance (no dimming etc). I bought a PAM02 and an HR12A by sight from Amazon, as I remembered a friend using these (or thought it was these, when I saw them on Amazon). They...do not seem to work together. Looking around a bit, I'm wondering if I also need a transceiver unit, or something? Can anyone point me to, say, a compatibility chart? i.e., this product will function with that one, requires this one, etc?

In retrospect I probably should have bought a simpler remote outlet pack from the hardware store; just thought I might end up doing something cool with the X10 stuff down the road.

Seriously, if this question is too dumb to even answer, please just put me out of my misery and give me a hint as to where I should have started out looking.

TM751 or RR501 transceiver

RR501 being a little better:

Welcome the the forums.

The reason it is not working for you. The PAM02 uses power line signals to control it. The HR12A Palm Pad sends an RF command. You need a transceiver to convert the RF command to a power line command.
Brandt mentioned what you would need.
You may see the X10Pro PAT01 which is the X10 RR501 or the PAT02 which is the X10 TM751 sold by some dealers.

Thanks very much, got it now.

While I'm familiar with powerline tech from a different angle (have been considering trying one of the networking solutions), somehow I never realized all these years that X10 incorporated it. I thought it was just RF or IR or something. Live and learn.

What would be some typical applications for the X10 powerline components?

Just for future reference, is there also a lamp or appliance outlet adapter that the HR12A can talk to directly? (Ordering a transceiver regardless, just wondering if there was a better choice I could have made to start.)

Thanks again!

There are no X10 appliance; lamp or outlets an RF remote like the HR12A can directly talk to.

The TM751 or RR501 does have an internal appliance style relay in it. So technically it can be directly controlled by a HR12A.
Though using all transceivers is asking for trouble and the TM751 uses Unit code 1 only. The RR501 has a choice of Unit Code 1 or 9.
