x10 Home Automation NetworkServer
« on: November 30, 2010, 11:34:32 AM »

So many new programs have client server code built in.
The problem is they can't do everything we want, and other programs can't access them or visa verse.
I'm currently working on a server that would allow that.
It requires the client programs to know the Server IP, and Port  as well as a minimum 6 digit end user configureable security key to send and receive.
The server basically repeats the signal sent to it.
The client software that sent the signal doesn't act on the signal it sent when it receives a repeat signal from the server.
The client code is written in VB.net but you should be able to convert it.
As of right now maximum of 99 clients can use this at the same time and all client could be on the same machine.
As of now PcCompanion links to it. Eventually BlueWatch will as well.
The issues I'm looking at are;
Is there any other programmers out there that would like to add the client code to their SDK software? ??? ???
If there are, would you be willing to share any modifications you do to it with the other programmers using it?
This is my first attempt at a client/server app so I would love a chance to chat with someone familiar with UDP and VB.net

What would end users like this to do?
What programs would you like to link via the server?

I now have the Universal HomeNetwork Server application posted.
X10Relayer simply repeats signals sent to it from clients.
It is capable of sending received PLC and RF signals it  sees, however that's all it does with that info.
Unless you've contacted me to use this with your created programs it is of little use to you.
However you may wish to have a look at it and make suggestions for the next buildwhich will be included in PcCompanion.

This sounds really interesting. It would be useful to be able to control your lights from any PC in the house.
I can do that now with X10 Commander, but I had to make a custom web page for that.

Thanks Noam!

My hope was that all your home automation programs could access each other via this relayer!
So far there has been minor interest in this.  :-[
None of the PCs need internet access to use this. However if a program like PCC  requires internet access for certain tasks then only one client needs that access.
It looks like only my programs will take advantage of this as those that expressed interest (thus far) don't have a Program ready for release yet  if ever.
I'm getting the last of the bugs worked out now with PcCompanion and any PCC programs on my other networked PCs
I've even included a pager (chat window) in PcCompanion.
I'll see about adding that to the relayer as well.
