laptop or desktop for AHP?
« on: November 15, 2010, 08:19:43 PM »

i have a choice between using a laptop or a desktop to hookup and leave running with my AHP & cm15a and wanted to know whats the best option is? im thinking it would be easier with my laptop since ill just have one cord to the wall for power?

Also my router will be right next to it, should i connect it with an Ethernet cable or have it connect to my laptop/desktop wireless

@george536:
The laptop (if not otherwise needed) will generally draw less power. You're right about only having the one power plug to worry about as well.

As far as a connection to the router, go with Wired for extra reliability. A wireless connection can drop or experience interference. A wired connect is a lot less to worry about.

Let us know how it goes! :)

ha george. Here's some advice if you get a laptop to run AHP. I to have a laptop to run AHP only and i have hidden the laptop (plan B). That way if someone happens to get past the sensors and into the house. I believe the first thing they will go for will be the things that are visible. Also with your email client set up a separate address for your emailed photos. Since there will be a lot of photos coming to it. That way you can delete all if nothing is wrong and your other messages will be safe.

George
Used a laptop for my system and had lots of problems.
I found all kinds of issues with the power saving functions of the laptop and software lockups.
After three different laptops, IBM, Toshiba and Fugitsu, with the Fugitsu being 2 years old I went to my desktop.
So far that is working much better, it's more stable.
If you are concerned you can use the monitor to set the system up and then use VLC viewer as a secure desktop remote so you can access it from anywhere and turn off the monitor.
Please let us know how your experiment goes and your results.

i use an acer aspire mini netbook and it does quite the job, it emails me when certain things happen and i also use autom8 on the same mini machine which lets my android phone get alerts and also turn on and off lights everywhere in my house.  >!
