Need Help with WS13A & WS14A connections
« on: January 29, 2011, 06:23:49 PM »

Hi,

I need help.

I trying to wire up a WS13A with the companion WS14A.  The printed instructions are a bit lacking...  But then again I'm not a qualified electrician.

The situation in switch box 1:
Three bundles of wires:
- bundle 1 (power in): black and white - black is "live" wire
call them 1-b and and 1-w
- bundle 2 (to lights): black and white
call them 2-b and and 2-w
- bundle 3 (to other box): black, white, and red
 call them 3-b, 3-w, and 3-r

The situation in switch box 2:
- One bundle ("3" above), three wires: black, white, and red

Box 2 is easy - use WS14A, black to Live, red to Control,
and white to other Live (correct?)

Box 1 is the problem for me - use WS13A
Using notation above to be concise:
1-b and 3-b to Live
1-w and 2-w to Neutral
3-r to Control

Where to connect 2-b and 3-w?  Both to Load?  I'm a bit confused and I don't get enough information from the instructions, as it only shows one traveler wire connection.

Thanks,

Walter

IS 1-w THE nuetral? If it isn't the WS13A will not work.
This doesn't compute.
Bundle 3 appears to be the 3-way connections to the two 3-way switches you are replacing with the WS13A and WS14A, so is bundle #1 and bundle #2 to other switches?

Hi Dave,

Yes, bundle 3 is between the switch boxes.  Bundle 1 is the incoming power and neutral; bundle 2 goes to the lights.

I kinda got it to work by leaving the white wire in bundle 3 (3-w) unconnected, with 2-b connected to WS13A's Load, essentially omitting WS14A (the companion switch).

The WS14A doesn't light or work, but I can turn the WS13A on and off manually, and with a controller unit.  I'm not sure why the HAP didn't turn it on, but that's another problem.

Well you have half of it licked. The LED on the WS14A does not work, only X10 knows why. I think the instructions even call it "Inactive".
Anywho, see if this will help.
