Non X10 USB Video adapter

Anyone have experience with 3rd party video adapters? I had one from Kworld and am using it. It can record video fine. The problem lies in taking stills....it won't. I thought once the signal was available to  AHP , it would handle functionality. Now I wonder if AHP signals the USB video converter to snap a still?
