RR501 Transceiver
« on: March 15, 2011, 07:17:49 PM »

The range of the RR501 Transceiver seems to only get to about 15-20ft. In order for me to use the Homelink in my car to turn on the lights I have to run the transceiver off an extention cord out to the end of my sidewalk and then they communicate (same if I use my remote). How can one extend the range of the transceiver? I have been told by X10 support to purchase a second transceiver and that will help boost the range.

Your hand held X10 remote only does maybe 20 feet to the RR501?
Or do you mean the hand held Homelink remote?
Should be a much greater distance than 20 feet. With an X10 remote.

Any metal obstructions between the driveway and where the RR501 is located normally?

It could also be possible. The RR501 is receiving the signals where you want to use it and there is power line issues to the X10 modules you wanted to control.
The outlet with the extension cord maybe on a different circuit that does have communications to the modules you wanted to control.

I have installed a phase coupler which did work and enabled me to communicate with all three light switches. The only issue is that unless the transceiver is sitting outside by my car the remote (credit card style) and my Homelink in my car (in dash) don't seem to be reaching the transceiver. When I bring the transceiver out by the car via a extention cord it works fine. Do you think adding another transceiver somewhere in the house will increase the range? The trasnceiver is currently in an outlet outside facing my driveway under my covered porch.

Is there a way for you to move your transceiver to a higher location?
Is your covered porch ceiling lined with aluminum soffit like mine?
That could be hampering your signal.

If the remote is an X10 one and not the one activating the HomeLink sender in the car.
You should be getting a much greater distance than 20 feet.
Could just be a defective RR501.

I know some online dealers have them fairly inexpensive and some through in shipping for free.
Maybe trying a second one or swapping the first for a second one would be a test.
If you can't find a different location as B.A. suggests.

I get about 50' from my homelink to a rr501 located in the living room on an outside wall.  I used my ICON RF remote to set the homelink.

Chew on this:  Homelink works by grabbing a frequency and code from an existing remote.  Had the remote you used to program the homelink been de-tuned or not exactly on freq., the homelink may not be either.  garbage in, garbage out.

Just a thought.
