just discovered this site while scouring the internet for answers as to why all ofa  sudden my Panasonic Viera plasma tv remote controls my Motorola DVR box.  At first i thought it was a comcast(cable tv) issue, but they came out and replaced the dvr box and said it wasn't there problem, unfortunately i agree. So what i now have happening is when i turn off the tv with the tv remote, the dvr box turns off.  same thing happens if i use the remote for the dvr.  I even manually powered down the tv-no remote, and the dvr box also shut off.  WTF!?   I cant figure it out. And this all started this past Tuesday after the power company changed a transformer on the line and power went out, creating a surge and frying my surge protector.  hasn't been normal since.

Any ideas?

Although this forum is for X10 equipment it could happen to any of us.
I suspect more then your surge protector got damaged.
Most surge protectors have some sort of insurance contact them and explain what is happening.
Also contact Panasonic and the other manufactures, the cable company has replaced their equipment so you've rulled them out.

Silly question: do you have one of those "controlled" outlet strips that turns off power to all other outlets when the device in the "controller outlet" is shut off? Maybe some one plugged the TV in the controller outlet by mistake.
