I have been out of the loop on my X10 stuff for a while, and I see they have come out with some updates to AHP.  I am wondering what suggestions people have for me upgrading to a newer version.  I am currently running version 3.228.  Obviously I will do backups of my current setup before the upgrade.  What newer versions are out there?  When upgrading, should I un-install what I have before upgrading, or can I install it over the top of what I have?  What is the most current stable release, and what features will it gain me?  Will I need to re-install all my plugins?  Are there new versions of the plugins?  Will I need my activation codes?

I will search the forums also, but anyone that wants to post issues they have had with any of the newer versions would be a help also.

1. I suggest backing up your AHX file in any case, just to be sure.
2. You should be able to run the upgrade directly over what you currently have installed, it will update the program and any plugins you have.
3. If you have any older (non-SoftStart) Lamp modules (or dimming wall switches), you will need to re-define them within AHP to make them work right. There is a separate "module type" for the older (non-softstart) modules.

Use this simple test to determine which type your lamp modules (and dimming wall switches) are:
a. Turn the light on, using a hand-held controller or from the AHP software)
b. Watch what the light does. If it comes up to full brightness immediately, then it is the older (non-softstart) type. If it slowly ramps up to full brightness (takes a second or two), then it is the new (SoftStart) type, and you don't need to change anything in AHP.

So now the soft start and non soft start modules have their own separate modules?  Are there a lot of new modules in the list?

Not allot of new module models. As there are LM465s that are soft start and the older ones. So the same module number is in both tabs, but how AHP handles them. Depends on which list you picked it from. Soft starts can be controlled by Extended messages and the older one can not.

Unfortunately, X10 didn't change the module number when they redesigned the module. Had they picked a new module number it would be easy to tell the difference.
However, there is no way to look at an X10  module and determine if it is SoftStart or not.

The only way to tell is actual observation of how it works.
Instant On and Off is not soft start.
If it ramps On and Off at about a three second ram rate it is soft start.
The newer wall switches are also soft start and have resume dim features.

Yes, it would have been nice if they would have at least named then LM465S or something.  I have read previously that most people observe them and mark the soft start ones with an SS or something which I will do.

I try, at least. There are a few that may have been fixed, but nobody has confirmed the fix (and I don't have the right equipment to test)
