UM506 Garage Door install help please...
« on: January 13, 2012, 02:46:26 AM »

<I've put this in the AHP section because it will eventually evolve into a AHP question but to start with I want to be sure I am on the right track with the UM506 install to operate my garage door but feel free to move as needed.>

I have a very old Stanley 440.15 automatic garage door opener with the single wire to glowing red button for open/close operation.  I was under the assumption that adding a UM506 (also called PUM01 - why 2 different reference numbers?) to this circuit would somehow fire the door to open.

I'm firing the UM506 with a SS13a and MyGarage app.  Both work to fire the unit but the unit doesn't fire the door to do anything, accept turn the read glowing button on and off.

I have tried pretty much all of the setting on the UM506 but would guess that momentary should work as the button push is about 1 second on the existing button.  However, in this setting the red light on the button goes out after the 'moment'.  In the continuous setting the light is on when the um506 is on and off when off.

I have been reading a lot (but haven't been able to find this exact situation) and this forum has amazing members!  I'm glad because I have some bigger questions after this one!  I'm very much intrigued by x10 but wonder if I missed the boat - but that's for another post.

Cheers.   >!

The UM506 is the X10 model number. PUM01 is the X10Pro model number. The X10Pro had a longer warranty and some thought it was more thoroughly tested before shipping.

Sounds like you have the UM506 in series with the push button. It has to be in parallel with the button.
Leave both original wires on the push button. Then connect one of the UM506 terminals to each of the push buttons terminals.

Thanks Brian.  Yes, you nailed it.  Actually the first thing I tried, before seeing your post, was to take the push button out all together. That worked, so now as you suggest I will wire it back in, but in parallel this time.

Many thanks.

I was planning to go on from here to get into some questions about AHP, but after moving some computers and receivers around most of what I have wanted to do has worked out.  I do have some questions about cleaning up my power line environment, but will post those elsewhere.

Cheers.

If you do this correctly, the light on the button should go OFF when the UM506 turns ON (since it is shorting across the connections). The lighted button should be ON when the UM506 is OFF.
