XPSS-IW and WS12A - Wiring Questions
« on: July 28, 2012, 01:31:05 AM »

Hello,

I am in Central America and there are no technicians willing to work with X10 stuff here.  I have installed a bunch myself no problem but now I am having an issue.

Scenario: 3 Way Switch.

Inside the slave switch: 3 wires - 2 yellow and 1 blue.

Inside the master switch: 3 wires - 2 yellow and 1 blue.

I assumed the yellow wires were load and line and the blue is the wire that connects the master to slave.  But when I set that up nothing happened, IE, no response - light doesn't work.

I will post photos, any suggestions would help.

Here is the master switch in the wall, for trial and error I tried disconnecting the blue wire, the master switch still controls the light when I do that and the other switch stops working.

This is the slave switch in the wall...

Here is my x10 master - according to it, it needs to connect blue (load), black (line), red (slave switch)

And here is the slave switch (x10:

Please help out...

First I am not familiar with your local wiring colors and switches layout.
They look like Single Pole, Double Through Switches and the Common is the Center Terminal of the Switch.
That would make the two Yellow Wires Travelers. On one end the Center Blue is the Line or the Load and on the other end the Center Green {well it looks green to me} is the Line or the Load.
Not knowing the common wiring colors used in your country. Best I can say is one switch common is Line and the other switch common is the Load.

Brian H,

Thanks, there is really no color standard here... at all.  It is whatever they felt like normally.  Which makes it even harder.

On the main switch there are 2 yellow, one blue.  On secondary switch - 2 yellow one green.

Is there some trial and error I can do to figure this out.  I am so confused.  On the main switch (I assume?), I pulled the wires one by one, it works with one of the yellows disconnected, so I assume that the yellow disconnected is what - the line to the second switch?

I just randomly tried to figure it out and connected everything and now the main x10 switch has no effect, and the slave x10 when I hold the button down the lamp comes on, when i let it go it switches off? What does that mean?

The Yellow you pulled off was a traveler and maybe carring the line when the switch is one of its two positions.
This diagram may help you understand the two travelers.
Common1 and Common2 are probably your yellow ones.
