Hello. Extreme noob here.

Sorry if this is wrong place to ask this, but I can't figure out what the difference is between these two wireless home security systems.

What are the advantages of one over the other?

Does one require a hardwired land-line phone connection and the other doesn't? That's an important concern for me. I don't have a hardwired land-line any more.

I would greatly appreciate some help understanding what the differences are between these two systems.

Skylink makes two different wireless security systems. Neither one is interchangeable with X10 Security Systems parts.
The AAA+ models that are sold by X10 and the Wireless Home Security Systems models. Like the SC-001 console used in all their assorted kits.

I can give you some details of the kits using the SC-001 console kits and the SC1200 X10 SecuriLINK.

Do you have any phone service. Like through your cable or internet provider?

I am slightly confused. I thought both the SecuriLINK and the Skylink systems were x10 systems.

Under the "Security" drop down menu.
Are they not both x10 products?

My family, like many these days has graduated to only having cell phones. Verizon wireless to be exact.

We have Comcast cable for television and internet. No phone service other than Verizon Wireless though.

Both of the systems on the X10 sales page have a built in dialer. Though I ran my SecuriLINK SC1200 with the phone disconnected.

Can you easily describe or list a few key differences between the two systems?

I have no other x10 products - so compatibility with existing stuff isn't an issue.

I'm mainly looking for a system that alerts any potential thief that an alarm has been activated, and something that will alert me through cell-phone and through an audio alarm (if I'm in the house) that "something" is in progress that might need attention from police and/or Mr. Smith & Wesson.

Both the Skylink and X10 SecuriLINK systems will not dial a cell phone on their own.
I have seen GSM devices that basically provide a dial tone and dialing for the console and cell phone network access.
They usually use a SIM card from your carrier and may have to be added to your cell phone plan as a added phone.
Also around $250.

I don't have any experience with the Skylink system. Sold by X10.
I do for their other SC-001 system console that is not the same.

I did find some data on the Skylink system X10 is selling. I have more experience with the other Skyliknk line of security systems that are not the same as the ones X10 is selling.
The ones X10 is selling. Can have up to 10 security sensors. Can control 5 control type Skylink modules [lamp appliance etc.} and 5 Keyfobs.
I believe two security sensors per zone as it has five zones. LED indicators for each zone.

The SecuriLINK console. SC12 or SC1200 depending on if you look at the model label on the console itself or the web sales pages.
Can have up to thirty security sensors [Door/Window or Motion} and each one is in an individual zone that is displayed on the LCD Display.
Security sensors can be set to delayed or instant and that setting effects how they act with an alarm.
When Armed Home from the console. Motion sensors are ignored. Door Window Sensors trigger instantly no matter if set to instant or delayed.
When Armed Away from the console. Delayed Entry and Exit time is used. Motion Sensors and Door Window Sensors act according to their setting.
Open a sensor set to delayed. The Entry delay has to time out before an alarm. Open a sensor set to instant. It sounds the alarm instantly.
Arm Away from the Keyfob. All Sensors sound the alarm instantly no matter if set to delayed or instant.
The zone that was violated shows on the LCD display.
Zones that are open also show on the LCD Display and indicate they are open if you try to arm in that condition.
