I am trying to set up the phh02 remote controlled chime for use as a driveway sensor but after it's plugged in and does it's first chime it let's out a ear splitting screech.  Now that my poor cats have almost had a nervous breakdown because of this is there anything that can be done?   I'm just not willing to give up on the whole x10 thing because I know it will work if I can just figure out the magic combo.  Thanks

Do you have any Two-way Modules that can send back their status when sent a status request?

As a matter of fact, yes.  A lamp module.

There's your problem.  Any two extended code commands (as for the LM14A 2-way Lamp Module) received by the Chime Module within a secord or so will turn it into a screaming meemie.  I've abandoned my Chime Module and replaced it with a UM506 Universal Module for just that reason.

I have had the same problem. I measured the screeching at 105 db. So do not expose children to it. To solve the problem I changed the house code on the chime.

I may test mine when and if X10 ever ships my order. They had no problems charging my CC just not shipped yet.

Got my AM14A modules today. The LM14A ones I ordered where sold out and I should be getting a credit back on those.
Anyway I maybe testing this weekend with the AM14A units. I did see one thing quickly. When you plug it in it gets in a firestorm of sending if my Smarthome Repeater/Coupler is on. I did find some data on the LM14A and AM14A on how it can be programed in x10ed [yup that is what they call it] code and that it has no backup ram when powered up it sends a code to a CM11A [was an older document] and it was supposed to program it back to what it was known to be. By default it replies to a Status request but can be programmed to send a status change when switched or in a group change.

i also have this problem. but only when i open my ahp software.
i open the software and it starts screaming. i un plug it and plug it back in and its fine. i dont have any 2 way units. my house is A and the unit is 9.

This is the exact reason why mine is sitting on the shelf.   

I use my SH10A Compact PowerHorn's chiming ability instead (it's even 2 toned and you can trigger the number of chimes... X10 system and Mini Powerhorn).

Bumped this thread cause I found a workaround for the screaming screeching banshee problem on the sc546a phh02 chime module.   I bought one of these to use for the pleasant ding dong chime (which you hear when first plugged in).  To my dismay, it randomly would start a loud chirping noise even if on a different house code than everything else.  Somebody aptly described the sound as being like a cricket on speed.  I thought the unit was defective so bought another one.  Same problem.   Researching here I found that it starts screaming in response to any extended command on the line (though I am not certain of this cause when I displayed the AH log I did not see this).   Anyway to avoid the 105 db ear-splitting screech you need to plug the chime into an appliance module then send on/off to the appliance module.   Small extra cost but if you have spare modules collecting dust then here is a way to put them to use.
